Thanks to Carl Field for this one.

I'm sure something will happen in Bloomington of note soon! When does the track open?

As cyclocross builds up to Louisville 2013, a reminder as to why those of us at the bottom end do it: not only for the chicks but also for the laughs! Consider our 'all category' races in the UK where 150 riders rock up at the beginning...total carnage!

Thanks to jason for the heads-up.

Team Panther/ SIB

Scholars Inn Bakehouse in Agreement with Panther Expedited for Elite Cycling Program

A formal collaboration between the Scholars Inn Bakehouse cycling team and Team Panther presented by Competitive Cyclist is in process. The exact nature of the program, the details, kits and naming is still in discussion but the leadership has agreed in principle regarding the value of the merger and the benefits to each team and the cycling community.

Joining forces with the successful Panther program, in its 5th year allows the current Scholars Inn Bakehouse program to be a true feeder team for this elite squad. Currently, the Scholars Inn Bakehouse program will remain relatively unchanged. The program will continue to be one of the Midwest’s premier cycling programs for USA Cycling Categories 2 through 5 as well as the development team for the Elite program. Riders in the beginning categories will be part of one of the region’s top programs and upper category racers will have the opportunity to be called up and compete with the elite riders at specified events. Overall, this creates a complete competitive cycling platform for the new Scholars Inn program. Scholars Inn Cycling will continue to welcome all local racers who want to be part of the program.

Pre-season Elite team roster for 2013:
  Kirk Albers, 43 Columbus, OH
 Jonathan Atwell, 31 Bloomington, IN
 Andrew Clarke, 42 Medina, OH
 Johnathan Freter, 20 Columbus, OH
 Ryan Knapp, 28 Bloomington, IN
Paul Martin, 40 North Royalton, OH
 Jeff Pendlebury, 25 Fredericksburg, OH
 Andrew Seitz, 26 Pittsburgh, PA
 Rob Thompson, 30 Lakewood, OH
 Martin Vecchio, 27 Detroit, MI

Others may be added to this or ‘called up’ to compete with the Elite squad at key events.
Kirk Albers, Andy Clarke, Ryan Knapp, Andy Seitz and Paul Martin are returning from the 2012 Panther team. The elite program is very pleased to add Jonathan Atwell from the United Healthcare of GA/706 Project Team and the Scholars Inn Bakehouse team, Johnathan Freter and Jeff Pendlebury from the Cleveland Clinic/RGF Team, Rob Thompson from Team Spin and Martin Vecchio from Lathrup Industries/Giant.

On that evidence, looks like it's DTD, Sigma Phi and Beta in contention for the win. Also great to see a lady from Rainbow Cycling get on the podium! I notice Kris Zee down in 12th place, I remember that name from a few years ago when he was the coming man, is he going to fulfil  his potential?

nothing new....

In these turbulent times it's worth saying that Lance wasn't the first to be on the juice. This is some comical coverage of domestique Bjarne Riis climbing Hautcam in the big ring. So ridiculous but it is great racing so..... Watch from 10min for the best big-ring action with Big-Mig looking like a Big-Ox.

Given the bore-fest of the TdF Sky domination this year, could the future of cycling lie with Alberto Contador? One of the most amazing things is that Contador didn't get Lance-stung and get busted for EPO like Landis et al....perhaps he has been clean the whole time.... What's that? He rode for Manolo Saiz.....oh well....

CycleFit

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be teaching an eight-week CycleFit class called Little 500 Power Training. It begins tomorrow and goes every Tuesday from 6:45pm to 7:45pm.

The spin bikes at the SRSC have cadence, power, and heart rate—all great tools for getting the best workout possible. This class would be beneficial to students training for Little5 and for anyone who takes riding seriously.

Here is the schedule and more information: http://www.iurecsports.org/fall_cyclefit. If you’re interested, stop by the Member Services Desk at the SRSC to sign up. Please email me at randikcox@gmail.com or call Member Services at 855-7772 if you have any questions.

IUSF Tuesday Night Racing Series #2

Just a reminder that IUSF is hosting the second Fall Tuesday Night Racing Series at Bill Armstrong Stadium tomorrow night (October 9th) beginning at 7:00pm.  There are lots of riders on the pre-reg list already and it's shaping up to be a good night of racing! Riders will be split up into different categories based on the year that they completed Rookie Week. IUSF will track the progress of all riders and award points based on performance enabling riders to move up in category as the series progresses.  If you can't make it, follow the online live stream at: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/iusf-little-500-tuesday-night-race-2

Should be some good racing!  Contact IUSF (Jordan Bailey, bailey25@indiana.edu) with any questions.

BloomingCross Preview Video

Upcoming IUSF Events

From Jordan Bailey:

On Tuesday, October 9th, IUSF will host its second Tuesday Night Race. We had close to 100 riders come out for a successful first night of racing last week, and we look to continue the trend. We have had such a demand that the men’s categories are nearly all full; however, if you are interested in competing next week and did not pre-register for the series, we will open up a single-day, first-come, first-serve registration at the Bill Armstrong Stadium Press Box starting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night for $20. We will take all riders that are interested until we reach capacity for each category. Please take a look at the athlete packet for more information about this Tuesday’s races. Additionally, if you can’t make out on Tuesday night or if you have any out-of-town alumni interested in watching the races, IUSF will be live-streaming and Tweeting the events on Ustream.

The registration has officially opened for the 2013 IUSF Little 500 Fall Cycling Series taking place October 25th through the 28th.  This year, the series will consist of an Individual Time Trial, Cylco-Cross, a Duathlon, and Street Sprints. For more information on the individual events, please take a look at the Little 500 Fall Cycling page. The deadline to enter is Tuesday, October 23rd at 4:00 p.m.

WWCX

From Adam Rodkey:

It looks like it will rain most of the day today. The CX group will likely not be riding at Karst tonight. I know, I know, we're supposed to revel in the wet and mud, but we don't want to damage the park grounds until necessary!

Autumn Series

Looks as though Riders Council have come up with a greatly improved Fall Series that kicks off with Tuesday Night at the Track this evening (#L5TNRS).
 Details here

Looking foward to hearing about how the events proceed. I see that the #L5TNRS is categorised by age which must be a kick in the teeth for the old boys of the track, Eric and Brant! I also notice that IUSF shows some class and don't give the ladies ages.... Start list for Tuesday 25th

MMSF TT #9 Results 09.11.2012

The final TT of the year had just 9 riders come out for the challenge, with most riders opting to ride Merckx-style.  To no surprise, Jonathan Atwell took the top spot with a 21.17 while strong-man Ryan Shanahan set a new season-best Merckx time with a 22.54.  Mandy Brothers was the lone female rider of the night, completing the course in 28.11 Merckx style.  Just because the "official" TT's are over this year doesn't mean you can't still go out and time yourself for fun or for a workout.  Times are on BVN, so you can see where you stack up - and also try to beat your own best time!  Thanks to Sarah Sanders for timing tonight and to all others who have timed this year for making it possible.  And of course, thanks to the riders for coming out, hopefully we'll see you again next year!  Full results below:

Full Results:

Place Name Time MPH Category
1 Jonathan Atwell 21.17 28.19 TT

6 Jacob Miller 25.58 23.11 Merckx

WWCX

From Adam Rodkey:

WWCX will be meeting at Karst again this week 6:30-7pm. We flagged and painted the course, but it has been mowed since then, so all flags may not still be standing. If needed we can put out more and/or make sure everyone knows the course.

 See you there!

Stolen Bike

Fellow Bloomington Cyclists,

Would you please keep your eyes open for a stolen 2009 58cm Specialized Roubaix Pro?  It was stolen today (9/11) between 7:45AM and 2:45PM.  The bike was locked (cable and locking rack) to the roof rack of my car in the SRSC parking lot. The bike has several identifying features, some of which include; nokon cables, black box bottom bracket, Fulcrum Racing 3 wheels and several other identifying characteristics.  The frame is a black carbon weave with red decals. An image of a like frame is included below. A report is on file with IUPD so if you see this bike please call them and contact me at csarvin@indiana.edu

 Thanks, Chris

IUDM Torch Ride

On Saturday, September 22nd, IUDM will be hosting its 7th annual Torch Ride, a cycling event, from Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis to Bloomington. Each year this event is a centerpiece of the IUDM experience, serving as a ride in honor of Ashley Crouse, an IUDM Vice President who passed away in a car accident on campus in 2005. Current IUDM VP Finance Eric Anderson will lead the pack of cyclists from Riley Hospital to Bloomington, while carrying a torch that will ultimately be placed at the marathon as a reminder of Ashley's legacy and dedication to IU Dance Marathon and the children at Riley. The ride itself will be at a leisurely, social pace, but we ask that anyone who joins the ride be comfortable riding in packs.

If you're not familiar with IUDM, the organization works year-round to raise funds and awareness for Riley Hospital for Children. Since it began, the IU Dance Marathon has raised almost $12 million for Riley Hospital for Children, which built and continues to support the Ryan White Infectious Disease Center. If you click the link below, you can learn more about IUDM and the Center it has built. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReLrlwR5WH4

We will be leaving Bloomington at 8:00am and will be providing transportation for riders and their bikes up to Indianapolis for the start of the ride at 10:00am. We will be using this route to make our way back down to Bloomington: http://classic.mapmyride.com/route/us/in/indianapolis/143131344391685772

The cost for participation will be $20, or $25 which includes lunch. Riders can register by signing up online at: http://www.helpmakemiracles.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.event&eventID=1281

Help make a difference today and gather your friends and teammates to join in on this amazing event! For more information please visit www.iudm.org or email Eric at eric.bradley.anderson@gmail.com with any questions!"

Summer days...

So it's time for Cyclocross to occupy average cyclists all over the world (while the Pros still race road) so it's a good time to look back over the summer racing. What were the highlights of Bloomington-based racing? The lack of PROs in town means do you look to the top-class amateurs (Atwell, Knapp, Dewart) or the winning lower Cat riders (Gartner as Cat3 crit champ)? Was the Bloomington Crit the best day of racing? Were there great performances off of the road or maybe an epic effort in R.A.I.N or Decycles? Let us know your highlight but hey, try to keep it clean.

WWCX Moving to Karst This Week

From Adam Rodkey:

We will be  riding the WWCX at Karst Farm Park  tomorrow (9/5). After a home game the tailgate field becomes a mine filed of broken glass, plus we have the Bloomingcross course mostly laid out and it needs ridden.

The course at Karst is (mostly) marked with paint, but we'll get started 6:30-7:00pm and make sure everyone knows the course, then get in some workout.

Upcoming Dates... Fall 2012

Just a few advance notices regarding Little 500 and other cycling dates.  First of all, the 9th and final MMSF TT will be coming up next week (Tuesday, September 11th), so if you'd like to take on the course "officially" one last time, plan on being there at 7pm.  Unfortunately, this will conflict with the IUSF Callout Meeting for Little 5.  That will be held also next Tuesday the 11th at 8pm in BU223, so interested riders should plan on being there.  A new, exciting series of events from IUSF is also coming this fall.  For the first time there will be a Fall Tuesday Night Race Series hosted by IUSF at Bill Armstrong Stadium.  This year the series will feature three nights of racing - details to come on that.  The races will be bi-weekly starting Tuesday, September 25th and will feature a mix of different track (velodrome)-style racing.  Also keep an eye out for the Fall Exchange Clinic for those teams looking to teach rookies exchanges early or brush up on exchanges for vets.  The full Fall Calendar for IUSF can be found here.  Just a reminder, the IUSF Group Rides will be going on all fall at 4:30pm from the Wilcox House - multiple routes are available and turnouts have been awesome so far!

Lastly, Road Wednesday Worlds will continue through the end of this month, with the 446 Loop on  Wednesday, September 26th closing out the WW for the season.  Looking ahead there is PLENTY of racing left this year for those willing to get a little muddy in cyclocross racing.  Adam Rodkey and Fred Rose have already been out scouting the course for BloomingCross so for those who are interested - plan on a great race this fall right here in town!  Wednesday CX Worlds is a great place to learn and hone your skills and it's a great workout in less than an hour.

Whether it's on or off the road, I hope to see you all out riding!

MMSF TT #8 Results 08.28.2012

Despite the students returning, only 14 riders took part in the time trial today - those IU professors must be cracking the whip!  Jonathan Atwell laid down the best time for the night, with a blazing 23.19 Merckx time!  Still far off the Merckx record (22.06 by Erik Hamilton), but he's got the best Merckx time of the season by far.  On the Women's side, Sarah Sanders shattered the Women's Merckx record with a 26.18.  Looked like tonight was the night to go Merckx with only three riders riding TT set-ups.  Thanks to Shane "Meatballs" Slaven and Sarah Sanders for timing and also to Sydney Hatten for stopping and helping out with the timing.  Good work everyone and hopefully we'll get a great turnout for the final TT in two weeks!

IUSF Group Rides!

Great news - the IUSF group rides are starting again this week!  Last year there were some great turnouts, with some rides exceeding 60 riders!  All ability levels are welcome and there are multiple routes, so please feel free to join.  Loaner bikes are available from the IUSF Wilcox House, so even if you (or a friend) don't have a bike, come anyway and you can rent one.  Here's the message from Jordan Bailey, IUSF Assistant Director/Little 500 Race Coordinator:

"Starting this Friday, IUSF is hosting weekly Little 500 Group Rides leaving from the Wilcox House (1606 North Fee Lane) at 4:30 p.m. There will be a lot of riders turning out for the rides, which will be broken down into groups to fit just about every skill-level of rider. The rides are geared towards bringing the Little 500 community together for a chance to socialize, while offering a forum for new teams and riders to become acquainted with the Bloomington countryside.

This Friday, the longer option is the Forrest route (30 miles) and the shorter route will be Mel Curie (18 miles)."

Please contact Jordan Bailey (bailey25@indiana.edu, (812)-855-1937) with any questions, or call/stop by the Wilcox House.

Bike Sale!!

Local strong-man Jonathan Atwell (who hold the best time of the season at the MMSF TT for this year!) is clearing out some bikes from his garage and there is plenty available for those seeking new (used) rides!  Listed are two road bikes, a mountain bike, commuter, and even a cyclocross bike!  This is a shameless use of the blog (GP did the same thing a while back...), but for Little 500 riders looking for a starter bike or upgrade some of these could be very helpful (the MTB and CX bikes could be great for training off-road over the winter too!).  Craigslist post here. Contact Jonathan Atwell with any questions!

MMSF TT #7 Results (08.14.2012)

We had 18 riders turn up for the TT tonight, however a flat tire prevented one rider from taking on the TT.  The weather was pretty much perfect, with cloudy skies protecting riders from the sun and mild temperatures in the 70s.  Surprisingly, there were several ties tonight - most notably a tie for the top spot between Lyle Feigenbaum and newcomer Mark Powell who just moved to town.  Both Lyle and Mark had huge PRs, dropping almost 40 seconds each off of their best times, so great job to both of them!  There was another tie for third between Chris Kroll and Alex Jerden, although Kroll was on a road bike (Merckx) and A. Jerden was on a TT set-up.  Chris Kroll's Merckx time of 23.55 is the new fastest Merckx time this season, so great job to Chris.  No surprises on the women's side with the Women's Course Record holder Sarah Sanders taking the top spot with a 25.21.  We had some other PRs as well, signalling perhaps better conditions than we've been having.  Congrats to all who came out and good luck to those competing in the USA Triathlon Age-Group National Championships this coming weekend! (from tonight's crowd, I believe that includes both Alex and Scott Jerden, Brittany Broyer, as well as Shane "Meatballs" Slaven).  Full TT results below:

MMSF TT #7 Tomorrow (Tuesday, August 14th)

Join us tomorrow night (Tuesday, August 14th) at 7:00pm in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest for the seventh time trial of the season! After this one, there are only two more left, so come and see what you can do on this 10-mile out-and-back course featuring several rolling hills and a blazing fast finish! First rider goes off at 7:00pm with subsequent riders going off at 30-second intervals. Come see if you can best your own best time and take on some good-natured competition! If you're riding out and want some company, a small group usually rolls out from behind BGI shortly after 6:00pm. And if you're looking for motivation...here are the top Men's and Women's times for THIS YEAR:

Men:
TT: Jonathan Atwell 21:06
Merckx: Dave Able 24:15
L5 bike: Paul Smith 27:33

Women:
TT: Sarah Sanders 24:48 *Women's Course Record
Merckx: Sarah Fredrickson 27:33

Current Course Record still held by Ryan Shanahan at 20:31

Also, the first Wednesday 'Cross Worlds of the season will take place this coming Wednesday, August 15th.  Meet at Sample Gates at ~6:15pm and ride to the Tailgate Fields (the field between 14th, 17th, Fess and Woodlawn) or just meet there at 6:30pm.  Expect off road riding/cornering/barrier skills sessions in a lap riding format.  This is a great way to get into cyclocross if you've never done it before and a great way to train for those with CX experience.  Contact Adam Rodkey (812)-339-9970 or Fred Rose (812)-339-3457 with any questions.

Road Wednesday Worlds will depart from the Sample Gates at 6:00pm as usual.  The course this week is the challenging Forest-North Shore/South Shore loop.  Expect a larger turnout as IU students are starting to trickle back into town (and expect bad traffic - freshmen move-in is also this Wednesday).

Hope to see good turnouts at all of these events!

From Adam Rodkey:

We will be starting up the weekly cyclocross practice rides next Wednesday (8/15). We will plan to run these as off road riding/cornering/barrier skills sessions in a lap riding format. We will start at the Tail Gate Fields (the field between 14th, 17th, Fess and Woodlawn) at 6:30pm and possibly move around to other locations in later weeks.

All are welcome. If you're interested in CX, come ride w/ us!

MMSF TT #6 Results 07.31.2012

Light rains and cooler temperatures tonight provided great conditions for the 17 riders who tackled the TT.  Taking the top spot and setting a new best time for the year was Jonathan Atwell who turned in a time of 21.06.  Fastest Merckx time was Thomas Walsh with a 24.56 while the lone female was Corinne Innes, coming in at 29.12 in her first TT.  Great job to everyone who came out and thanks to Carl Field for timing tonight.  Also, Carl left this message for everyone:

"someone left some stuff at the start/finish line at the TT thi9s afternoon -- a spare tube, one Park tire lever and a Crank Bros multi-tool in a ZipLoc bag. Give me a call at 812-369-0908, we'll make arrangements to get your stuff returned.

Seems as though the Indy Crit was a wild success yesterday with over 500+ pre-registered riders and appropriately huge fields. Riders were so excited that podium positions were celebrated in highly unorthodox fashion!

Superweek

Superweek may be in long term decline but it still offers 2 weeks of non-stop racing, the cost has been the same for 3(?) years and they don't (usually) cut the races. 30mile Cat 3 and 60mile Pro/1/2 crits are rare. Started last night until 22nd July. Get up there and race!

MMSF TT #4 Times 07.03.2012

We had a decent turnout tonight given the heat - 22 riders came out to tackle the TT.  To no surprise, it was Jonathan Atwell who took the top spot tonight with a time of 21.08 - the new best for the year.  Atwell keeps inching closer to the 21 minute barrier - can he be just the fourth rider to break 21 next time?  Dave (Able ?) took the top Merckx time with a time of 24.15 - a new best for the Merckx category this season.  Topping the women was Sarah Sanders with a blazing fast 25.06 - just 3 seconds off of the best female time this year.  Thanks to Tom Saccone for timing tonight.  There were also some complaints from riders about other riders drafting once they'd been passed.  So this is a reminder to those participating in the TT - please do not draft if you're catching someone or if you've just been passed.  Lastly, just a quick note from me - some of the names were not very legible, so I did my best with the spelling.  Obviously if I know you it's not a big deal, but if I spelled any names wrong, I apologize.  I will shamelessly blame the handwriting on the timing sheet for that.  Anyways, full results below...
