L5 by the numbers

I may have posted this link before but it's a guy doing some stats on the series events. Somewhat interesting.

That's interesting. Han's record was during the race he did not win, and then he crushed everyone the year he didn't even win at all in ITT's. It sounds like his form was tapered better in 06 then in 05 where he might have peaked at ITT's. Obviously he was still strong during the 05 race.

Chris - 05 was the year Phi Psis wrecked Hans and several others in turn one of lap one. He spent the day chasing. I think they might have wrecked a second time after he did catch on.

Phi Psi wreaked Hans? Or as the rest of the Little 5 community calls the event Hans wreaking the field.

Tom - if you watch Phi Psi going into turn one, they hit the brakes.

Todd,

True but on the first lap when everyone is trying to get a good wheel you have to expect poor riding conditions. Hans should have moved inside more to avoid his wheel rather then tap his brakes. The video is clear the person at fault for the wreak was Hans by having bad position on the track and not communicating for position.

Fair enough.

I said he was still strong in the 05 race. But not 06 strong when he lost ITT's to a team he lapped.

He should do a stats analysis on the women too! They don't get enough love.

Arnesen won ITT's by over 3sec in 06, the data is wrong. Bishop was second. btw Tom, how is riding behind the pole team on lap 1 a bad position, and how is the pole team hitting the brakes to be expected? clearly Arnesen crashed first at caused a pileup, but was not completely at fault.

Good call Johnnny. I'd have to watch the video because I've never seen anyone hit their brakes while leading and no one is in front of them. The only way that would happen is if they were deliberatly trying to crash someone behind them. He was perhaps following too close to the wheel. While this is acceptable in most road races, you have to be more conservative in little 5, or it will cost you the race. Also, it was lap one and he should have had time to recover from that since he had the ability to lap the field. I think he came kind of close. Either way, he was strong but possibly not as strong as the following year when he had a slower ITT. Weather conditions and field depth play a lot into these factors that cannot be calculated.

You are correct to note the data is wrong for 2006. Hans did win. I have fixed the error and am double checking to make sure no other errors are present. Be sure to check out today's post on the importance of team pursuit as a predictor of race outcome.
