PRO CAMP!

Good to see that Bloomington and Little 500 continues to be a breeding ground for professional cyclists. Picture from Bissell training camp taken from Podium Insight

Can you ride professionally and still race in Little 5?

Anonymous said...

He's not a pro. You can be on that team and not be a pro. Easy assumption to make (that everyone has probably made) but it is certainly the wrong one

This could be a problem for Eric and the Cutters. Who paid for his trip to California. Is the bike he's riding (valued at over $8.000.00) in Bloomington? GP should have left this one alone and under the radar.

Eric Young is not a member of the team. This is simply an audition I'm guessing...

Looks more like a dress rehersal than an audition.

Be curious to see how Mike Howard calls this one. They say a picture is worth a thousand words!! Even if the contract is not signed on the dotted line, it sure looks like someone has attained "professional status".

Frederick said...

Yeah, about that. I'm not sure the chief steward has anything to say about pre-race eligibility.

Anonymous said...

why is eric young riding bikes and not posing for Cosmo? he's a beefcake

Anonymous said...

The Rules (Part XVI) states: "any action not covered in these rules and regulations shall be determined by the Chief Steward and Judges."

This part applies because the elegibility requirements do not state who makes the final determination (with the excpetion of Amateur Status Modification).

Just telling the news as would have done for anyone else! Eric himself has been looking forward to me posting this picture as much as I have been!!

Ryan Kiel better sleep with one eye open after this. I heard Hank is one mean son of a bitch and he seemed fired up at the track today talking to Depass riding around

Anonymous said...

"Joining the team are Andrew Baker, Andrew Dahlheim, Chase Pinkham and Jay Thomson." I don't see Eric Young listed here. As we've discussed before, he is following the rules to a T. Congratulations Eric!

Please do not reference me on here. I've got better things to worry about than this silly bike race and its formalities concerning others and their actions of cowardedness. Thanks

Anonymous said...

I would like to win the race but not have the best riders present. Therefore, if you have beaten me (at anything!) please do not show up on April 16th. I know that includes pretty much everyone that has ridden a bicycle in Bloomington, but thanks for your cooperation. Thanks, from a not so loveable loser.

Ryan Kiel

Anonymous said...

I'd like to see Hank and Kiel duke it out even though Kiel would get his ass beat. Coudright is the only one on the track that could give Hank a run for his money in that department in my opinion

Anonymous said...

Looking forward to seeing Eric go from strength to strength through out his cycling career. Its exciting for him (and vicariously for the Bloomington racing community).

Allez Eric! Allez!

Cheers,
Fred

Good for him. Hopefully he goes on to do great things in cycling so I can say I raced against him. This doesn't mean I won't be hoping for the ill-timed flat come April 16th.

Dear "FRAT" post above:

Grow a pair and ride your bike.

Anonymous said...

I heard that Fowler and Kirkham made him ride in Little 5 gear the whole time while at the camp. He was then dropped on the first climb

Anonymous said...

I'd like to express my extreme disappointment in Ryan Kiel's outrageously backhanded attempt at excluding a quality cyclist who has done nothing but follow the rules from Little 500. Eric Young could have signed a pro contract and didn't, presumably because he wanted to race Little 500 one last time. Today, Ryan Kiel organized a meeting amongst all little 500 men's teams to try to get Eric Young banned from the race this evening; however, the Cutters weren't supposed to find out about said meeting (therefore, they excluded anyone who they thought would protest, thus it is unfair and backhanded). SHAME ON ANYONE that attends this meeting; it is unlikely that anyone who attends the meeting will bring up the very important point that Eric Young has broken no rules in his quest to be a phenomenal athlete.

It is not Eric Young who is ruining the Little 500, as so many of you BVN posters often say... Those who attempt to exclude athletes who promote competition and follow the rules of eligibility solely because these people are incapable of beating those athletes on race day are the ruination of the Little 500.

My opinion: Young Should not be in the RACE.

Reason: He should be in Europe.

Since he is not, and he has made it this far, let him race.

Anonymous said...

Who cares what Kiel does/says? If they hold true to form, they will screw something simple up within the first 25 laps. Kiel is too much of a pot head to actually ride his bike--Eric is too classy to give a crap.

Anonymous said...

Who's going to start the pussy of the year award to give to Kiel at the banquet?

Anonymous said...

I respect Kiel. Cutters get off BVN and go back to PS4. Oh wait, this is PS4 Part Deux

Anonymous said...

People, Young is not that good, not even the best rider to ride little five in the last ten years. Talented yes, but you seem to think he is Jesus, he isn't ready for a Euro trip at all. He is fast, strong, and works damn hard, but he is not that good, he can be beat in a sprint and in little five. So figure out how to do that, I'm pretty sure Tom already knows how, or he will tell you he does.

Anonymous said...

Rodkey's got his mind in the right place. Can we talk about how badass his bike is? Any chance Pinarello might be the next Little 5 bike sponsors? Eric, can you try to put in a good word?

Anonymous said...

Was not aware that little 5 was a real bike race. Idiots. Get a life. Argue issues that matter.

adamrodkey said...

The Pinarello frame? Meh. I'm pretty sure it comes the same C-Tech factory as every other carbon frame made in Taiwan. If that, it may be Chinese.
The Campy though, that's all Euro.

Anonymous said...

I cannot say I think any higher of a Schwinn with a sticker saying "Not intended for racing," but point taken. I would be fine with getting Casati or Cyfac if we want real Euro cred.

adamrodkey said...

I'll take a Taiwan frame any day. But I want it from the source. I just don't like rebadged stuff. If my frame or frame tubes are coming from Giant's factory, they might-as-well say "Giant" on them.
I like forward technology and hand made stuff: Giant/Campy.

A Little 5 victory this year with Young not in the race would merit an asterik the size of Barry Bonds' steroid-grown head. Eric never cheated, has never let all this success go to his head, and is just an all-around amazing person. He has followed every rule in the book, worked his ass off, and 100% deserves a crack at a 3rd ring. It's a little unfair that he's off in Cali on a Dogma with an army of coaches and pro teammates, but again, he's earned it. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to harden the fuck up.

Does anyone reading this really want to win a race where the best eligible rider wasn't allowed to ride for being too good? Seriously, grow a pair.

See you on the track.

After reading the previous commentary, I have decided that:

1) Although I am not certain of their unofficial result in the first Little 500 men's race in 2010, in the second one, GGC's official result was 6th. So along with Young, there were 19 other riders preventing their victory. I don't know how many of them are still at IU, but Kiel had best get on the campaign trail to remove all of those remaining from the '11 race. Get to it!

and 2) Eric Young is a category 1 rider. He is completely eligible and has broken no rules. If we are to use the standard that training with pro's is grounds for removal from Little 5, then Phi Psi, you are also out for having gone on a ride with Chris Horner, and anyone that has ridden with either Mike Sherer or Guy East in Bloomington, you are also out.

This is an absurd thread.

Sincerely,

Just Go Ride Your Bikes.

Anonymous said...

Boom Roasted.

What's the ruling on hooking up with a PRO? Still eligible?

Frat

Miles said...

@Just Go Ride Your Bikes,

Indeed, technicalities can be argued either way regarding training with pro cyclist. Depends on the context. We must always take this into consideration. I can see the issue from both sides. He's worked hard, has developed "carefully" from Morris Trucking to NUVO to now (but not yet!) to Bissell Pro Cycling. Wow.

Had we the time to focus as much on cycling as he has then certainly many of us could be at this level as well!

Study hard (for those of you who care about more pressing things than cycling) and see ya at the track.

Anonymous said...

Eric does not want to join yet because he is not Drug Free yet.

Zachary Lusk said...

Miles you must not know Eric that well because that's one of the more ignorant posts on here. He is one of the brightest people involved in Little 5. A neuroscience major with Italian minor I believe. I hope you are as quick as Eric as you continue to develop as a cyclist and you very well could be you've got some pop in those legs but don't blame his quickness for your current insecurities we've had enough of that this week.

Anonymous said...

Equating Phi Psi's riding with Chris Horner and every other Joe riding with Sherer and East with what Eric is doing is asinine.

Is Eric skirting the rule...yes. NO ONE can dispute that. I just think it is poor taste on Eric's part to be participating in Bissell activities prior to April 17th. But...that's his choice.

If he was truly putting off turning pro until after Little 5 then he should not have any contact with the team until then. And he certainly shouldn't be riding around on an $8,000 Dogma in full Bissell kit. It just paints a poor image, but that was his decision.

Also, quit arguing about wanting to keep the best rider out of the race. That's not what this should be about. It should be a debate on if Eric has "reached professional status." If he has...then he shouldn't ride. If he hasn't...then he should.

That's up to IUSF to decide and it sounds like they made their decision (I doubt Eric would have moved on this without discussing with Pam first).

Let's move on to something else. Too much wasted energy on this topic already.

Miles said...

Not meaning to demerit him at all Hank. I certainly respect him, he's the boss! But indeed the last lines come off punchy--let me correct my wording by replacing *time for *dedication as that was what I intended. And the last note is addressed to all! Thanks.

Anonymous said...

I agree w/ Anonymous Poster from 6:40 pm. Whether or not Young is pro or not, he is certainly rubbing the loophole he has found in the face of IUSF and the other L5 riders by riding around Bloomington in Bissell gear and having pics posted of him w/ a pro team, on a pro bike, at a pro team camp, etc. That's kind of weak on his part, but is his decision to rub it in. If the IUSF doesn't mind being made a fool of, so be it. He'll race.

Anonymous said...

Where is Todd Neville? Can we have your thoughts Todd? 1. XII. My christ.

Anonymous said...

I know Coudright ran a boxing club before Little 5 and I think the cutter rookie who showed up was Walsh. So the party story doesn't quite make sense.

Anonymous said...

I agree with all the previous few posts.

Hank needs to get more pop in his legs.

Eric needs to give me his dogma.

Anonymous said...

If you think that Eric is "rubbing it in" by "choosing" to get his picture taken, then you clearly have never met Eric. He is one of the most humble, nice guys in the group.

I don't even race Little 5 (grad students are exactly prime candidates for it...), but I want to see the best race possible. The race would suffer without Eric in it.

Fucking Bitches, Making money. That is all the Cutters are about, and now Young is the Captain of the good ship Pimp Juice.

Find a better post for 69 on this lame thread, not likely.

Anonymous said...

I think this 2011 L5 race is ripe for someone to do an indie re-make of the Breaking Away film (or Breaking Away Part Deux)--

--wherein the whole screenplay is immersed in a sort of universe-inverting type of irony--

--that the Cutters have now become the fancy and unavoidably arrogant people that everyone envies with their fancy bikes and chiseled and embrocated bodies and fancy girlfriends--

--and the "laxbros-gone-cycling" fraternity dudes are now the unkempt and overlooked and restless coming-of-age underdog townies.

Regardless of whether a major producer jumps at the cinematic opportunity I am just freaking giving away here to document the occurance,...the ending of the actual L5 2011 race will of course parallel the original film---with the remarkable upset of the empire by the strong legs and huge hearts of a few simple yet complicated, marginalized yet fearless, and lovable but serious unlikely-heroes.

The question is, who will be in the starring roles on the "Anti-Cutters"?

Rim Rodkey, you are now the biggest idiot in the little five community. Sounds like they named the rim job after you. Pam has done a fine job as race director and is always looking out of the best interest of all those involved in the race.

Anonymous said...

What a fucking douche. Pam does great work.

Todd said...

I've been lurking and think most of what needs to be said has been said. Here are my thoughts (which I'm sure most already know):

1) Eric was one of those guys who had never ridden a bike before he started with the Cutters and he has developed his cycling skills through the Little 5 community. He is exactly what the event should be celebrating and has played by the rules. He made a decision to sacrifice his USCF racing because he wanted to ride Little 5! That should tell you how great this event is and how committed to it he is.

2) I haven't been directly involved, but from what I can tell, she has done a great job handling the race over the past few years and this situation specifically.

3) To the poster who believes that anyone could do what Eric has done if he had the opportunity......no comment.

4) Kurt G is Jesus not me, although he'll say otherwise.

April 16th will be fun!

Anonymous said...

We couldn't just stop at 69, could we. . .What's the next funny number? 420? That's really pushing it, idk if there's that much hatred in Bloomington.

adamrodkey said...

Epic backfire!
Suggesting ghost posting for R Kiel was shady has only netted me a ghost poster. Oh well, I'm sure Pam and Young know that I've signed in for my posts and "Rim" is probably tossing salad in his frat house.

Anonymous said...

Other teams get free kits, a few get free bikes from their cat 1-2 teams and it's no different than Eric. Just because his bike is $8,000 and someones elses free bike is $2,500, doesn't make a difference. Legally, Eric is a Cat 1. Legally he is within the rules. Legally this is not like NCAA basketball where gifts would make you ineligible.

That's the jist of it. God forbid they enact another Art Keith rule a week after quals and cost Cutters a 2nd victory by pulling out the best rider in the race.

I do like the movie idea. I've thought of about 10 of them but th,is one actually sounds kind of good. But it would need to be like Rocky 3 where the Cutters get knocked down and out, Kirkham dies after a frat pushes him down on raceday near the pit, and the Cutters come back hungrier than ever with flashbacks of Kirkham training the old Cutters while Depasse trains to a montage of an enthralling new Lady Ga Ga song.

What should I do? Should I admit that I’m cutting it close? Should I remind you that I am following the rules?

Should I go over the Little 500 Rules of Eligibility? What should I do? Should I tell you how much fun I’ve had being apart of a 4-in-a-row winning team?

Soo, this thread went well.

Should I really believe I personally have personally tainted Little 5?

What should I do? What should I do Pam? What should I do GP? Should I have my trophies and memories taken away? Wanna see my shinny new Dogma? Should I just sell Bissell Pro gear? Should I tell you, I am not a roll model? Hi Hans.

Seriously! What should I do? Should I tell you I’m an intramural bike race championship chaser, I did it for the records, the rings? Should I be who all you haters want me to be? The villain. Should I accept my role? As a cheater and fold at some pathetic petition? Maybe I should just disappear to Northern Cali?

I’m not listening to all this garbage on this post. Blah, blah, blah that’s all that is on here GP. Should I stop listening to my Cutters? They are my friends.

Should I try investment banking?

Should I make you realize who I’ve become? Should I read you a soulful poem? “…Throw me to the cinders, you may tear and dirty my new fresh kit, but still, you cannot catch me. For like a cheetah I sprint.”

Should we just ignore and forget about what I’ve done on the bike these last three years? ON THE INSIDE! What should I do? Should I be who you want me to be Bloomington Velo-news?

There are a few topical creams that can be applied to rid your genitalia of 'the funk.' If they are not strong enough, you can take a daily tablet that will be effective, but has side-effects such as hair growth under toe nails, lack of musk which will cause your wife to leave you, and of course spontaneous orgasms of the anus.
