ITTs

The good thing about being away from Bloomington this year is that nothing changes except the color of the skinsuits or the design of the aero helmets!
Mens Results
Womens Results

Eric showed again that he is a class apart and why is it not a surprise to see a Cutter rookie in the top 5 of ITTs? Fiji show their quals run was just a miscalculation. All other top teams show solidly, with Beta ex-runner Tom 'pin-point' Laser throwing down a top ten time. PDT will be hoping Chris West makes a good recovery from his bust wrist as with him, PDT once again look to have the best strength in depth.
As expected CvK, Balchan and Brown are top of the tree (a comment below suggests Caroline's time was a little closer to CvKs. Any truth to that?) but with the Teter rider having much deeper support she won't have to do all the heavy lifting come race day. Theta once again have unearthed a gem in Chelminiak and DG with 3 in the top 13 show their qual run was far from a fluke.
Overall and as expected, very much a case of 'same as it ever was'.

Brown was not as close as the poster suggested. I didn't have a time on her but CVK won by a fair amount on sight test alone.

Anonymous said...

What happened to Chris West?

Todd said...

Broken wrist.

Anonymous said...

I would agree that CVK won but definitely not by 3 seconds. It was a half a second at most.

Updated Race Predictions:

2.FIJI
3.SIGMA CHI
4.PDT
5.BKB
6.Grey Goat
7.HOOSIER CLIMBER
8.PHI PSI
9.DTD
10.Delta CHI

SO SAYETH "THE WORD ON THE STREET"

More importantly, how does a person do a 4:33 ITT. Eric Young could have done almost 8 laps in that time, and many people can run faster than that.

Anonymous said...

CvK won but only by a little (a bike and a half). I was in the press box and there is no way that Brown was 3 seconds behind her.

Anonymous said...

They always do shit wrong. So Caroline may have been second. Book it. They screwed up what place we finished in 99 and you can see it on the tape. They gave us the wrong placed trophy in 98. They need to give the timers ritalin to keep their minds on the track.

Anonymous said...

Any aero helmets on the track last night?

Physics

At race speed the bike goes 30 feet in one second.

IUSF

Even numbered ITT heats

At race speed the bike goes 10 feet in one second

Odd numbered heats

At race speed the bike goes 100 feet in one second

Anonymous said...

Chris,

I would say it is a big deal considering the fact that it sounds like Brown was only a fraction of a second off your your girl, and that is with an injury.

Anonymous said...

Believe it or not, my guess is IUSF is not out to screw Caroline over despite what some people might believe. It is hard to believe that 3 or 4 timers could all be so far off of the supposed accurate time. If so, oh well. How do ITTs really matter? Caroline will be competitive in the race and so will Caitlin-we know that. A finish between the two of them would be one for the ages and then maybe we can stop placing blame elsewhere and let it come down to whose legs are the fastest on race day.

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure if the issue is as much about IUSF being out to get Brown as it is about the obvious flaws in the current timing system.

Anonymous said...

Did I say it was no big deal? dipshit. By the way, Caroline is a friend of mine so I wrote this in support of her getting second, not third. If you knew her, you'd know that her quad only hurts when she runs. It has no effect when she rides. Ask her yourself. She told me that directly.

At what point did I say anything to discount Caroline?

Anonymous said...

MORROW IN THE AERO HELMET!!! yeahh you bet it made all the difference getting you in the top 10! right on boss

To 12:58 and all other complainers:

Then come up with a better timing system that costs the same as the current one then. How many riders, coaches, fans walked up and thanked the timers last night? I would venture to bet only very few. The sense of entitlement amongst the Little 5 community is bullshit. And there is plenty of blame to go around from coaches all the way down to the riders.

ITT's is a series event. It is essentially for fun. If you don’t like the way it is timed, then don’t do it. The overall purpose of the race is to raise money for working student scholarships – not to provide the most scientific timing facility that money can buy. IUSF does the best it can with the resources available. If you want better timing, then go to TrueSport and do a parking lot crit with 30 people in attendance. If you want to race on the largest intramural event in the world, where skydriver drop in with Old Glory, the president makes a surprise visit, with coverage in the campus and local newpaper and on national television in High Def, then ride Little 5 AND STOP COMPLAINING!

I am pretty sure that Tom has offered up a much more accurate timing system for FREE for the past few years now. Also, in terms of spending money in stupid ways I think it is silly that we are having digitally printed pit boards this year--that can't be cheap, and it seems to do more to get rid of the spirit of Little 500 than does a better timing system. Maybe we should use that money to get the track in better condition. Both IUSF and the riders put in a ton of work and neither party seems to understand that. However on this issue I am on the side of the riders. When there is that much of a discrepancy and disagreement in the times of the top 3 riders I would say that is a problem. I watched the run in question (CvK vs. Brown) last night and was absolutely astonished that they had almost 3 seconds between them as they were pretty neck in neck from what I could see (and the other people around me). 3 seconds is a lot of time. It's a shame really.

Anonymous said...

Chris - glad you elected to remove your post. It was one giant contradiction ... among other things.

My understanding is that the pit boards were donated in exchange for sponsorship. I personally think they are an improvement and one less thing for the smaller teams to have to worry about leading up to race day.

Todd said...

Here's some interesting stats for the top 41 (riders under 2:35).

Teams with at least 3 riders back placing in the top 40:

Average improvement for the 3 riders:
1) SNU (-3.94 secs; 38 places)
2) Cutters (-2.47 secs; 21 places)
3) Delts (-1.95 secs; 21 places)
4) BKB (-1.11 secs; 17 places)
5) Phi Delt (-1.03 secs; 19 places)
6) F1J1 (-0.56 secs; -13 places)
7) Sig Chi (+2.61 secs; +3 places)

BKB is a bit skewed because Smoot improved so much while Bailey and Mis both slowed from last year.

The other skewed result is Phi Delt - Sharp slowed 4 secs and no Chris West.

I'm curious what Sigma Chi is doing. They're the only team that is worse off than last year.

Well I guess Tom is not coaching the crap out of them

Sam Haribson had the ride of his life. So did Zach. Those guys can eat 5 McD's double cheeseburgers quicker than their ITTs run. The Cutters are a one man team. Kevin, he's obviously peaked.

My Sigma Chi's will destroy all, they didn't have a good day. Wait for Miss n Out, Cutters will fail. PDT & F1J1, yeah you too. Epic fail

Can anyone tell the most recent year when a coach placed both a Men's and Women's team on the podium (if ever)?

Looks like Tom has an occasion for history with Wing-It and the Sig-Chi's this year.

How many people have coached both a Men's and Women's team in the same year?

Probably at least 10 a year you moron

Sigma Chi and the Cutters were the only teams to have two riders place in the top ten.

Anonymous said...

If Young was sponsored by Dyson I would be impressed...Bissel dosen't even have ball technology.

Anonymous said...

CVK went 2:40 and beat 73 guys? Was the track slow?

Anonymous said...

Maybe CVK is just faster than Brown.

Anonymous said...

I doubt that many coaches coach 2 team per, year as far as podium finishes? I would say Norm has claim to the title.

If Sigma Chi plans on riding with 2 riders, I would say they are in decent shape. Top 10, congrats. 33 and 50'ish, nice but not the coming of doom.

Anonymous said...

As a former rider, I think all this fuss about timing in ITTs is a little over blown. In all reality, it's really only for bragging rights. White jersey, you say? Meh, its a nice trophy, but not the end of the world. While it wouldn't hurt if they paid more attention, I'm fine with the gunners hand-timing ITTs.

HOWEVER, I think there should be an improved system to time quals. Logistically it would be easier since there is only one team at a time (rather than 4 riders concurrently). But the big reason would be this: human error with a stop watch is about .25 secs; Beta Sigma Psi and Lambda Chi Alpha were .06 and .08 secs from qualifying for the race... you do the math. Fortunately, I was never affected in that way, but considering that quals can literally make or break a team's dream, I think it's only fair that they have an accurate method for that day.

Norm was 1st in both races in 07. As far as timing goes, i could get 3 4th graders that had good attention spans to easily time this better than 3 IUSF kids that just want IUSF volnunteer on their resume. What a huge disconnect. This happens year after year. Pam can't control what she can't control.

Hans won in 07 and KD won in 07. 1 and 1. Greatest year ever. Both were slight underdogs, and one lapped the field.

The stopwatches seem like an easy thing to use. But they only work 85% of the time. Timing systems are not that expensive.

Most IUSF workers try to do their job. Some of them blow. Reality....

Anonymous said...

Reality check to 1:36am: ATO did not even qualify in '07 so Norm did NOT win both races that year unless he was coaching Cutters (which we all know he wasn't). Hans lapped the field in '06 to give ATO the win and KD was 2nd that year for the women. KD went on to win in '07, but as mentioned above, ATO was not in the men's race.

Who wins Miss N Out's this weekend?

2 to 1 - Young
3 to 1 - Depasse
4 to 1 - Sharp
5 to 1 - Other

Anonymous said...

Stuart is a smart rider too and he progressed from last year. Give him at least 2 to 1. Was his itt a fluke?

Anonymous said...

I'm taking Young in miss n' outs, and as much as I like experience in this event, the Depasse pick up there is interesting to me and I could potentially see that happening. Odds are at least one main contender will find some bad luck and not make it to finals (see Young in '10). I don't know if Sharp has it in him to repeat, but wouldn't count him out. Maybe an outside pick of Ellis?

Anonymous said...

is ellis the least talked about superstar ever?

Anonymous said...

i wouldn't consider ellis a superstar by any means

Anonymous said...

Holy father please pray for the demented bloggers! Ellis, more like "stuper star" am I missing what Sir David has done to warrant such acclaim? I know let's put him in the HOF! NOT!

Anonymous said...

getting 2nd does not warrant consideration of superstar status. granted eric won but it wasn't like ellis seperated himself dramatically from the rest of the people and has never done anything in miss-n-out or team pursuit. ultimately nothing to brag about in the race either...sorry he's a very good rider but by no means a superstar

Heard through the grapevine that Delts and Sigma Chi plan on attacking the Cutters together. Anyone else hear this?

Anonymous said...

That is the best April Fool's day joke yet, teams working together during Little Five. It is a race, everyone wants to win, no one will give up their chance to win for another team to beat the Cutters. That would be stupid

Anonymous said...

Courtney and Tom collaborating? Interesting.

Anonymous said...

I think everyone is missing the obvious false part of that statement...the Delts attack! Haha that is humorous. The Delts will never even take a pull at the front, yet alone launch an attack where they will be forced to put in work. Now that my friend, is the best April fool's day joke I have heard!

Todd your thoughts?

Two things:

1) Miss n Out schedule is up:

http://iusf.indiana.edu/little500/rider_info/spring-series.html

2) Why does everyone keep hammering Delts for being wheel sucks? They were extremely aggressive last year.

Anonymous said...

the only way any team is going to beat the "all-powerful" cutters is by attacking them early and often

- little 5 alum

Anonymous said...

They tried that one last year, the attacking just dropped several non-cutter teams and the Cutters ended up well on their way to lapping the field. Going to have to get more creative than that.

Anonymous said...

It's still a better strategy than sprinting against Young.

Anonymous said...

Looks like they messed up the seeding again. Young should be going against 32 and 33, not 17 and 33. This is the same for 2 should have 31, instead of 17.

This seems like a yearly problem. You would think they could just have a blank template with the proper seedings, and fill in names along the way. It would not even cost anything.

Anonymous said...

Tom and Courteny talking? too funny, I know for a fact those 2 haven't spoken in years for whatever reason. an Delts attacking isn't Courteny's M.O.

I have heard him cursing at his riders in the pit for taking a pull like a lunatic on race day.
I will never understand the logic in that. Seems content for second if you ask me, from my count he has coached 3 or 4 second place teams over the years.

Something to be said for "first loser"

Anonymous said...

When did wheel sucking become en vouge on race day? Does it ever work? Seems like pretty weak strategy

Anonymous said...

@ Todd, everyone keeps "hammering" delts because they are the New TMT, or TMT Lite, (haven't decided) but they have adopted the old TMT strategy which didn't work for TMT and won't work for delts. Maybe if they get a new coach they would get a better result.

wonder what is like not riding like a man on race day DTD?

*Ha*

Anonymous said...

Delts strategy is to not pull.

Last year, they were only aggressive when they had to be. If they were off the front, they would not share pulls.

End of story. Truth.

Amen, Tell it!!!!! The were off they were told to get back i the pack, pussies!!!

You guys need to go back and watch last year's race again. Don't watch yourself, only watch the Delts. They were very aggressive and did not just suck wheel.

Anonymous said...

WHO CARES!?!? I don't see delts being a factor in this years race. PDT,Sigma Chi, BKB, and FIJI But I do not see anyone beating Young. Too strong.

Anonymous said...

Why wouldn't Delts be a factor? They probably should have been second last year if not for dropping the last exchange, but they still manage 4th. That was with 2 rookies. This year they return all but one, and he is replaced with a rookie who got 21st in ITT's. This team is probably as good an all around team as Delts has ever had.

-Biased Delts Alum

Anonymous said...

They will screw it up.

Just watch, they will pull a 2009 TMT and have their sprinter do 2 two sets in the last 20 laps, and not get on the bike till lap 198.

Anonymous said...

WHO CARES, THEY SUCK!

Anonymous said...

Ah yes. The race tape! What HDSuck doesnt show (because of great commercial breaks, even in the dvd) is that their aggression was someone else leading them out, and them being stuck out there, hoping for a new wheel, only to realize that they couldnt find one. Scary Scary.

At 12:13 AM. That stat is straight up BS

Why didn't delts compete?

Todd said...

I believe they raced the collegiate race.

Anonymous said...

Delts did not compete because from what I heard they are having internal issues. From a friend of mine in Delts their team is falling apart, barely riding, and even refusing to spend time in the same room. The riders decided to demonstrate their anger towards their coaching staff and each other by refusing to ride today. I hope for their sakes they can get it together come April 16th
