Duelling Crits

This Saturday (8th) sees the unfortunate occurrence of having two crits in Indianapolis on the same day. There is an USAC race in Brookside Park and an ABR race in Eagle Creek Park. This seems crazy to me and from my perspective it's part of efforts to undermine any race that Dan Daly puts on but I may be somewhat biased toward the ABR race as am a friend of Dan Daly and don't know Matt Jourdan (organizer of Brookside Park). Dan Daly and the Indiana Race Series have been putting on races in Indiana for over 10 years and although Dan is not a perfect organizer he has been a consistent supportor of bike racing in this State where many other race organizers have come and gone.
A comparison of the events-

Where- Brookside Park, Eagle Creek Park
Affiliation- USAC, ABR
Licence Needed?- Yes ($10 one day for Cat5), No (included in entry)
Cost- $30-$35 (cat1/2), $30
Cat1/2 Prize- $750, $500
Masters Prize- $100, $400
Cat 3 Prize- $0, $400
Cat 4 Prize- $0, $300
Women Prize- $100, $200

People always criticise Dan Daly for his poor prize-list but you decide for yourself.

On Sunday 9th there is an ABR Monrovia 40km Time Trial

The Brookside Crit was scheduled in early December of last year. It was included in the IN/KY USAC schedule that was emailed on Dec 7, 2009. My recollection is that the IRS schedule was published in the February/March 2010 timeframe. [Statement of fact.]

No one seems to remember way back in 2004/2005 when the local USAC promoters tried to work with Dan to align schedules between the various groups, but Dan was not interested in proactive prevention of conflicts. [My perspective, FWIW.]

I suspect that most 1s and 2s will do Brookside and that the other categories will do EC. The truly adventurous will figure out a way to do both. [Opinion.]

If Dan's races weren't so darn early I go to it but I like to sleep in a little on the weekends. Old guys need their rest.

I did not see the Brookside race on the early schedule so that would change my perspective a little. Primarily I think it's a shame there's such a conflict for whatever reason.

However I would agree with the doubling up strategy, especially for the Women, Masters and Cat1/2s!

Jordan's Planet Adventure schedule was def posted earlier for what it's worth.

Can someone confirm that CAT 3 and 4 races really pay out $0. that seems a little scummy if it is true.

This is from the Planet Adventure Race website, this is the standard for all of their races:

* Cash Purse for Women CAT 1/2/3/4 $100 / 3 places
* Cash Purse for CAT 1/2/3 race only, $750 / 10 places
o This is to help promote the advancement of racers up the category chain. What all racers should be striving to become, better racers and the reason we have categorized events! This is also the reason for longer races, chip timing, no push backs! Quality events for the money!
* Cash purse for MASTERS 35+ 1/2/3, $100 / 3 places
* Cash purse for MASTERS 35+ 3/4/5, $100 / 3 places
* Winners of all other categories receive free entry fee to any future cycling or inline skating race by Planet Cycling
* USA Cycling Permitted, cash payout will not exceed stated amounts.

can someone spell out bullshit a little better? i hope this jordan guy knows the definition of taking advantage of a situation. its called having 40 people pay 30 dollars and then keeping all the money for yourself. nice job! way to promote advancement.

Remember the Spring fashion essential: the 40k t-shirt. Available only 1 place (not eBay).

Let's look at some more facts

Refs at the race - USAC=3 // ABR= less than 1
Permit Insurance paid - USAC-Yes//ABR= ????
Actual prize money paid- USAC -100%//ABR- ??

# of individuals placed in the top 20 after getting lapped/dropped/cut the course/sat out a lap(or 2) - USAC=0, ABR=20.

don't forget the $5.00 fee to get into the park

the only fact that I want to look at is why I should pay 30 dollars for a race that only gives me a number and a place to ride? Wednesday night rides are at least free. granted we dont get a swanky number that may come with 4 pins.oooh...pretty

Please answer this for me and then i will consider your race. Until that time i will continue to do other races that support rider development through paying out to the top 5 or so 4-5 riders in an effort to commend their efforts. Then it is through the upgrade that you reach the great incentive of a 750 dollar payout against pro wanna be's

Lets look at another fact:
30 3/4 riders are listed on www.truesport.com as having been in the race.

30 * 30 = 900.

Luckily 1st place in this race gets his 30 dollar entry paid into the next race. Otherwise, the promoter just got 900 more reasons to be happy that he is smarter than cyclists.

I guess I shouldnt be so critical. Lets see how the results pan out after the Cat 4/5 and 5 races comes out. Maybe they didnt have 20-30 guys that paid 30 dollars for the same result.

Race promoting 101 - USAC
Cost to organize a race -before one entry fee is received--- lets look at what your $30 dollars pays(150riders) for - $3 Rider insurance, $3 ref cost. $1 Permit cost. $3 equipment overhead. $2 venue rental, $3 registration services(makes sure your not standing in line for hours), $1 race numbers(yes I know you think they appear magically), police - $3, equipment (chips and timing - $2 - prize money - $6 - That's $28 dollars going to pay for the race - and $3 to the promoter for each rider -- WOW - these promoters are making out like bandits -- $450 for their trouble -- to split between 3 people... for over 40 hours each of work EACH.

Those mathamatics seem flawed. If 6 dollars are going to prize money, where are the prizes? Second, it appears only 2 dollars are going to the promoters (serves them right).

Now before we get all huffy about this, I must say that many other races give much more money away. I feel like they get this through race day sponsors. Not sure if this has been conceived. Next. Why should the racers continue to come to this race versus another race if the other race has an equally versatile course with a cash incentive? I believe the good people at taco sports in ohio are as equally interested in gaining wealth through races, yet they still give away merchandise awards to racers. Consider these things.

-- and you have about a 50/50 chance of actually showing up in the ABR results. DD is a waste of space.

Wait, wait, wait. You mean to tell me someone is trying make money providing a service? Waht do they think this is, America?
(If you don't think their service is worth while, don't patronize their business. It ain't that hard.)

My question has still not been answered. Why should I pay $30 dollars for the next 4 races that are provided by this promoter if there are no prizes for my category? All I am asking is that you either lower the entry fee, like taco sports $18 entries, or provide some type of prize.
