Backyard Cross

The OVCX series may be over, but the cyclocross season in Indiana continues through the month of December. This weekend's racing included the second annual Backyard Cross, which took place on John Schmitz' property near Bargersville, IN. The sunny but sub-freezing weather provided a break from the past few weekends' mudfests, but still left some greasy corners by the end of the day. With the ICX series as the only remaining outlet in the region for maintain form through nationals and worlds, Backyard Cross drew several riders from Ohio and Kentucky in addition to the Indiana regulars.

Elizabeth Cobb and Sarah Fredrickson took third and fourth places in the Elite Women's field, while Lindsay Rodkey took third in the Cat 3/4 Open Women. Fred Rose and Adam Rodkey both finished in the money in the Elite Men's field, with second and sixth place respectively, and Don Galligher took second in the Elite Master's 35+ category. Will Sorg capped off the day with a fifth place in the Cat 4 Men's Open race.

The Backyard Cross course will see more action on Saturday, when it will hold the Indiana State Cyclocross Championships. The ICX double weekend will conclude with the PAX Gray Goat at the Fair Cross on Sunday.

Yeah, the payout is pretty shallow. We're a long way away from the 'salad days' of the OVCX.

good thing knapp didn't show up. =taking candy from a baby

R.Knapp said...

If they were literally giving out candy to the winner, I would have definitely gone. I like Skittles and Snickers. Just sayin'.

Anonymous said...

assuming you would have won

Anonymous said...

knapp to these guys is like eric young to little 5

Anonymous said...

Eric Young is to Little 5 as Ryan Knapp is to cross as Todd Neville is to making bullshit comments on this blog.

Todd your thoughts?

Lindsay Hall-Stec said...

Actually, they did give out water bottles of candy to non-$$ categories at the Yorktown ICX race. They also gave the elite payouts in singles...

FakeBillArmstrong said...

If Ryan Knapp showed up? Like my gandpappy always said, "If - if, ands, and buts, were candy and nuts, everyday would be a lot like Christmas."

Now, this cyclio-cross chatter is about as useless as teets on boar hog. How about we get down to the business that matters...Little 500.

Who's going where for Christmas break?

Why is this anonymous poster so enamored with Todd? Because he's a better athlete than you? Because he is usually right? Or because you are envious of all the winning teams he has been associated with? If he was such an idiot you'd think the Cutters wouldn't always win, or want him there. It must pain you to see someone have so much success in life when you have trouble even waking up in the morning.

Another week of racing, another set of kudos to Fred and the BVN crew!

Predictions on the State CC race?

Todd we don't look to others on there thoughts.

Todd your thoughts?

Anonymous said...

the L5 talk on here simply proves that point since frederick and adamrodkey seem to be the only ones who don't talk about L5. SNU ftw

Frederick said...

Given that almost all the other "posters" are anonymous. (and could be the same person for all I know). It proves sweet FA. If you can't attach your name to it, its probably not worth saying. If it proves anything its that the dysfunctional banter by a few may be what makes BVN jump the shark (just as it buried PS1, 2 and 3)

Anonymous said...

Just wait for Hank to chime in claiming he's the reason when everyone knows he's worthless as a rider and a human being. Easy for him to talk shit when young is always there to clean up his mess

Frederick said...

Like I said. If you can't attach your name to it, you shouldn't be saying it. Anon 4:30's post is totally inappropriate. Its also the kind of garbage that will drive this blog to extinction.

Todd, to answer your question. Saturday's race should have some flavor. Card is a contender. Eric Anderson will be tough as will JJ if he registers. I'd name drop Andy but he only seems registered for Sunday. As for myself, I have every intention of making my presence felt.

Anonymous said...

leave it to frederick to prance around on his high horse and make people feel his presence

Even though this Todd guy is an instigator, there is way too much hate here.

I enjoy a good dig once in a while, but this is all just spiteful.

Maybe the fact that a majority of the Lil 5 community don't live in bloomington longer than 4 years has something to do with it. After 4 years, you never have to see any of these people again - do as you please.

FRED, just 30 days til you're a fucking world champ!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Agreed. So many haters

Carl said...

anon 6:52, when you're able to see a bit better (right now your vision is obstructed by your lower colon), you'll realize that you did a great job of making Fred's point for him. So easy for so many here to be the internet tough guy while hiding behind the curtain...

adamrodkey said...

11:36, you may be onto something. But my point is why can't there be one post on here that is NOT about L5 (such as this one) and there NOT be L5 comments made in it? I know L5 is all that matters to some people (like high school football is all that matters to some people, living the 'glory days'), but talk about it in the appropriate place(s) for fuck's sake.

Todd said...

@adam - a club I'm in had a similar issue with anonymous posting on its discussion board. When the club was small and everyone knew each other, the anonymous posting was fun because you'd see the person within a few days. During workouts, everyone would discuss who said what and laugh about it.

As the club grew, the anonymous comments were about people who didn't interact with one another. Suddenly, people got more and more personal in their posts and pretty much every post would contain a snide comment.

Eventually all anonymous posting was shut down. The board is still highly used but has lost all its personality. Now it's: what's Tuesday's workout and who's in? The traffic has decreased significantly.

There's a fine line between anonymous posting driving traffic and becoming white noise. I know that our club never figured out an answer.

adamrodkey said...

I don't ave a prob w/ bogus anon posting per se. I just don't see why bogus anon posting about L5 has to show up in the comments section of a post written about a bike race non related to L5 at all.
The L5 posts? Have at it. Talk all the smack you want and trash all the people you want. But I'm not going to comment in a L5 post about the MTB race I did that weekend.
It's been said a million x before, but it's Bloomington VELO News (velo being 'bike' for the uni-lingual).
And don't get me too wrong, though I couldn't care less about L5 if I tried, I do think it's cool that this school's "big event" is cycling related. That is a good thing. It drives the sport locally in many ways and drives business in ways that otherwise wouldn't be tapped.
Simply put: there's more to Bloomington cycling than L5. Much more.

2 things

- There is a photo of a little 5 bike at the top of the blog

- w/o little 5, three bike shops could not survive in this town - don't alienate your clientele

Frederick said...

2 things anon 10:28am:

-Don't be pedantic. If it helps you, I can have Garaint change the picture on the masthead to something else. (its just a picture).

- We've been serving the little 500 community for over 30 years. They are a valued part of our customer base that we do not take for granted. That said. The three shops in town could not survive on the little 500 alone. We proceed at our peril if we act as if Little 500 was the only thing cycling wise going on in Bloomington. (because we don't want to alienate the majority of our customers)

adamrodkey said...

Quoting myself: "...That is a good thing. It drives business in ways that otherwise wouldn't be tapped..."

adamrodkey said...

And I don't have a problem with a L5 bike being pictured on the top. Because L5 IS a part of Bloomington cycling. But to quote myself yet again "there's more to Bloomington cycling than L5."

Anonymous said...

Yo Ram Rod you are wrong...Bloomington without I.U. would be hillbilly heaven. Aka Bloomington cycling without Little 5 would be pretty much you (the Ram Rod), Mr. Rose and Todd (the commentator). L5 is Bloomington cycling.

I drink your milkshake.

John G. said...

Hmmm... Anon, I think you're giving yourself (and other L-5'ers) too much credit. There is way more to the B-ton cycling scene than the lil' 5. The question is is the little 5 a real bike race? The other question is will you continue to race, or even ride your bike after you leave? Or will you go the way of so many others and get "the bread face." (phil tomato, Andy, etc.)

Todd said...

anon 12:12 - Adam never argued that Bloomington would be the same without IU. He said there would still be a cycling community without Little 5. He is completely correct.

What I don't understand is Adam's disdain for Little 5. I'm just curious: Is it jealousy that it takes the spotlight? Have you had bad experiences with Little 5 riders?

I don't mountain bike but I don't dislike it because a lot of guys I ride with love it. I kind of see Little 5 as the same thing. Even if you aren't a Little 5er, it still adds to the fabric of the cycling community.

Frederick said...

Its a shame Rhetoric is not stressed more in school. Anon 12:12AM glaringly displayed the most basic of logic fallacies in constructing his (ahem) "argument". Little 500 does not = IU. If IU was not here, Bloomington would clearly be a very different town.

FWIW, there are whole lotta Bloomington cyclists who'd take umbrage with being left off your 'oh so brief' list of riders here in Bton. Of course Todd, hasn't lived here in well over a decade.

John is correct.(as a former Bloomingtonian himself) and a generally well connected staple of the Midwest cycling scene I'd say his point about cycling hereabouts is spot on.

Unfortunately this board seems to be headed in the direction of previous boards, basically due to the posting of people who choose to make comments for which they can’t be held accountable. Geraint realized this last April when he required posters to register, but that just slowed things down. If one simply ignores all posting that start with “Anonymous said...” the community has a much better chance to having this blog be what it is intended to be: “Cycling news from the Bloomington Bike Community”. Both Little 500 and non-Little 500.

The nameless posters rarely add to the discussion, as this thread clearly demonstrates. To say that there is no cycling community if there is no Little 500 is ludicrous. And the person who made this comment illustrates his complete lack of understanding of the relationship between the cyclists who are involved in Little 5 and those who are not. Little 500 provides an opportunity for people to try bike racing, and if they enjoy it, they can flourish in Bloomington which has an incredible support system for beginning cyclists. The Bloomington cycling community brings knowledge and passion to Little 500 in the form of coaches, mechanics, trainers, etc, many of them Little 500 alumni.

It is the people who try to polarize these two groups who should just pack up and go elsewhere. The sooner the better.

Tom

As much as you guys try to deny it, this board would not be alive without Little 5 discussion or anonymous posters. Any non related story gets 0-15 comments max and some of those are sprinkled with Little 5 talk or making fun of Todd or Hank. Tom's board was alive when it was anonymous as well. I would just delete comments that are inappropriate and leave the ones that are kind of funny. Little 5 stories gets over 100 comments sometimes. It's ironic but the people that are annoyed that everything turns into Little 5 are only making it worse by talking about Little 5 being annoying.

Frederick said...

What the Anon posters bring to this board is a big "donut". Worthless, unaccountable, self titillating snarking and hate. 0-15 good comments are worth more than 100 vapid "drive by" snarks.

Anonymous said...

Fred,

If that were true then the P&S board would still be alive. There are barely any comments at all over the summer. Geraint disagrees with you!

Frederick said...

I think Geraint can speak for himself. Tell me. How can we tell that a cluster of anonymous posts isn't just the same couple of 'lovely humans' pulling their own strings over and over? I talk to many cyclists that refuse to post here because of the ridiculous conduct of a handful of anonymous souls. P&S died a deserved death because posters couldn't behave like civilized people.

Anonymous said...

I know of very few websites on the planet that do not have these same discussion wars. Cycling.com is much worse!! They are all jerks. Every comment section on any online newspaper also has the same vitriol. There are some that are civil but that is because the moderators remove posts. Why do people have such thin skin? It's kind of hilarious. I come here to be entertained by mild trash talking. And the people getting made fun of make it worse by defending themselves and then it snowballs to 40 more posts just because of someone defending themselves and becoming a bigger target. Society is f-ed up but really it has more to do with people trying to entertain themselves by being stupid....and many of these posters are definitely stupid. And sometimes it's on purpose and sometimes it's not. I am anonymous poster but I do not hate on people. Nobody would know who i was anyway because I wasn't any good. But even giving my opinion on great upcoming teams like Wing It get trashed.

midschro said...

Fred when did you start riding bikes/when did you get serious about riding bikes? Just curious.

adamrodkey said...

I wouldn't say disdain Todd. More indifference. I have no problem w/ the event or the participants. It's like field hockey to me; it's there, whatever, I don't follow it or care much about it. My only point here is just time/place of comments on this blog.
And 12:12: the saying is "Bloomington w/out IU = Bedford." And that shit may be true.
But I'm off milkshakes and on Monster Energy, so have at it.

Todd said...

Thanks for the explanation Adam.

I'm not in Fred's camp that anon posters offer 0 value. 3:27 is a good example and some barbs are fun. However, when they become the majority of the posts, it hurts the value of the commentary.

The only way it works is if a very thick skinned moderator constantly monitors the site and deletes the really bad stuff. We weren't paying Geraint enough to do that.

Anonymous said...

why yes, please do use all of your infinite power to have the "masthead" changed

Todd said...

Fred was correct about Eric Anderson. Other predictions Fred?

adamrodkey said...

Anderson laid down a big marker today at Backyard V2.0. He will not be at nationals though. He probably should be, but will be on a family vaca.

How hard is it for a poster to put a name in the "Name/URL" box. That way you are not grouped with those who post to annoy.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm well past pedantic. I'm downright didactic. (I'll own it)

Owning a quality such as lecturing others too much? I'm sure glad I don't own that. People that use big words do it to show others that they are more intelligent than them, therefore hiding a major insecurity (possibly money/career related)...just sayin
