Quals 2010

On a day that was somewhat lacking in drama the Cutters cemented their clear favorite tag for the Mens race as they returned to the pole after a few years break. Kappa Kappa Gamma put down a marker that their program is back to relevance by taking the pole by a very slender margin over perennial Quals contenders Teter.

Full results Mens, Womens here but what did we notice during the day-

1. Awesome crash on the Cutters first attempt. Eric Young going so fast that he washed out in a loose turn 3. 'Patches' Schroeder almost lost it on the final lap of the pole attempt. Were the Cutters too fast for the track?
2. Hoosier Climber repaid Jim Kirkham's prediction and killed their exchanges to finish in the top 10.
3. SNU went last on the day on third attempt and showed no nerves to finish mid pack to push LAMP out of the race.
4. Was there a little justice in SDT missing out for the women? In 2006 knowing that a successful 3rd attempt would get them in the race they qualed with a ride over 4mins that was within the limit if not within the spirit of the rule (Pi Phi and Gamma Phi went to a 4th attempt). This year their 3m19s wasn't enough to get in and they become only the second womens team not to make it.
5. Good to see Beta back toward the top of the pile
6. Greatest celebration was the DZ scrum after being successful in their 3rd attempt!
7. Most unusual action of the day was from PIKE would only had two riders as they waited for their 3rd rider to find an ID. They proceeded to essentially practice exchanges before black flagged their first two attempts. It seems the ID wasn't found and they exited the race on time after a two person 3rd attempt.
8. The post-exchange forward roll of the first AOPi rider and the Greg Bortz (Acacia) pirouette were the best 'moves' of the day!
9. An angry Gray Goat team who didn't get their full warm-up due to an issue at registration yet managed to qual in 3rd.
10. There were 8 all rookie teams and Chi-Omega topped the lot, showing natural talent is much better than experience or coaching!

Emanon, which is "no name" backwards.

I thought it was a tribute to that hip hop group.

The American hip hop duo Emanon consists of emcee/singer Aloe Blacc and DJ/producer Exile. They are based out of Los Angeles, California, and they formed in the 1980s. Emanon released the EP Anon and On, on Ill Boogie Records in 2002. They also released The Waiting Room on Shaman Works Recordings in 2005[1]. Exile released his debut album Dirty Science in 2006[2], featuring contributions from Slum Village, Kardinal Offishall, Oh No and others.

Cutters too fast for the track?? Hah, honestly, when is the last time somebody has fallen solo on a quals attempt? That's funny. There have been plenty of fast riders making a sucessful hot lap. I'd say the Cutters need to work on their L5 bike handling skills otherwise they might be wrecking in ITT's and Miss 'N Out! Or first lap, turn 1 in the race...

Someone told me they could ride one-handed wheeleys. With skill like that...turn 1 should be a joke.

You know when the last time that happened was? Bill Nass the current 1 lap record holder. Young is a great bike handler. He was at 17 seconds going into turn 3.

better hope they don't crash into 1 starting off the race because everyone else is going down too if thats the case

Say what you want...but the fact is that the Cutters have the pole.

Yep, you're right, the Cutters smoked the pole on Saturday!

Who thinks they go 1-2 in ITT's on Wednesday. The last time they did that they lapped the field in 2000.

Anonymous said...

No chance of a 1-2, none whatsoever.
How about them Gray Goats eh?? The only team that relies on a 5minute warm-up on the spin bikes for quals...and still killed it!

Actually they did in in 07 as well and won. Funny that the record for ITT's was the year he didn't win the race.

Why is there no chance for Clayton? I'd say 1 out of 3 chance although he's a better distance time trialer.

Actually they did not go 1-2 in 07, Neff and Sovinski went 1-2, ahead of Young, Land and Feldman

that was 07, as young was in high school in 07

they really went 1-2-3 in 07

the one and only Erik Hamilton took third and was not scored as he could not ride that year. Alex 2nd Sasha (Held out of the Hall of Fame) Land was 1st

my apologies, that was the next year

Honest answer: Bill Naas.

Yes sir, plenty of fast riders have indeed made a successful hot lap. But plenty of fast riders are just that: fast. And fast is not fastest; they're not record-setters. Is that nervous laughter I hear?

The Cutters took the pole. They will most likely not be able to wear green on race day. But, more importantly, neither will anyone else. Because no one else was (is?) fast enough.

Good thing Fiji spelled their name "F1J1," because that's where they ended up. Maybe they should've gone with FIJ1, or F1JI.

Last time I checked, Young is not a record setter; he's "just that", fast. Let the beat build... Cutters will choke.
