ITTs

ITT list can be found here (if anyone needs it in PDF form then email me). Looks like the power 'hour' runs from 7:50 to 9:20 with the main heats between 8:15 and 8:45. Look for the mens winner to ride at 8:35 (Ellis, Young, Bailey, DRR) and the womens at either 8:20 (Brown, Metherd, Kent, Davis) or 8:30 (Half, Arnesen, Van Kooten, Balbach). Should be fun!

Fiji might not have had a good Quals run, however you can fully expect them to have a good ITT showing, expect at least three of them in the top 15 no matter the conditions. Trogden? Mercer? Your missing alot of good riders, the possible windy conditions pushs the event towards power and away from pure leg speed though. So who knows keep the guesses coming.

Anonymous said...

Those 2 could get top 10. I don't understand your power comment. Do you mean smaller riders/sprinters will have trouble? The wind is usually dead at night so I doubt it will affect the top 10. You need power in all time trials. Pure leg speed is typically a sprinter. This is a VO2 max interval which combines power with some endurance (anerobic mostly). But you better have a good spin, or your power is worthless on an L5 bike. The gear is too small.

Caroline Brown will win the Womens followed by Balbach, Van Kooten, Half. Brown isn't getting much credit for her quals run where Pi Phi was 7secs off of pole with not much help from her other 2 riders (how little help will be apparent after tomorrows ITTs).

Caroline Brown is beatable. We will see how far she is ahead after tomorrow. We know she's very fast and that she can sit in for 75 laps and win, but where has she completely dominated? In practice? I haven't seen it yet. She's very talented, unselfish, and sweet though. Her great personality makes everyone in awe of her.

Anonymous said...

I think the above comment says it all. I'm interested in seeing how she fairs tomorrow night as well and see exactly how DOMINATING she really is. anyone can sit in and do nothing all race and be fresh for the end

Anonymous said...

Not anyone can sit in like that! It does take a very good rider. It's not like a crit or something.

Please watch last years women's race to refresh the idea that she just sat in last year.

please note her teammates getting good gaps from her, then disappearing off the back in a few laps on the bike, several laps later you see her having bridged back up to the pack. She wasn't at the front the whole race, but she was certainly not sitting in and waiting, she had to cover for teammates that were not as certain they could win as she was.

Will she win ITT's who knows, it is only four laps, but at least respect what she did last year. Just because the cameras didn't follow her all race and she didn't get shout outs the whole time, she was putting in work.

Anonymous said...

On that note, has anyone been dominating women's track practice? There are usually not many packs, however have any women stood out as very strong riders thus far? The answer to that question could very well be the ITT winner on the women's side. It doesn't appear that there is one single dominating women's rider this year such as Kristi Hewitt of last year or Sarah Reike of 2008. I would say it is a toss up between several riders.

By default I think Brown is labeled this allstar rider of the women's field but in my opinion she shouldnt be because she doesn't ride on the track all that much. Too busy out training with Clayton I suppose...she can pull through for a couple laps as far as I'm concerned if she wants to be considered a good rider in my book. My grandmother could ride the race she did last year

Off topic but...

why does it seem Cutters can't graduate in 4 years?

My guesses,
- they aren't book smart guys to begin with
- cycling is #1, classes are #50
- mix of the two above

Any chance your grand-mother could pledge Chi-omega? I'm not sure riding on the track at practice is a pre-requisite for all-star/ HoF. However winning the race is....

You need to change "can't" with choose to stay.

If you can stay and ride bikes, you should! You're gonna work for 40-45 years, it seems pretty smart not to rush it. I'm saying this after 13 years of working and I love what I do!

A couple of things:

First, I do not, nor have I ever claimed to be the "dominant" women rider on the track. I will be the first to say that there are many very talented women on the track this year -- Metherd, Half, Arnesen, Kent, Balbach, Van Kooten just to name a few-- each of them have their different strengths and work hard to excel on the track. Why not spend your time commending those women for their own success rather than tearing mine down.

Second, the claim that I am not at the track much is accurate; however it is not because I am out riding with Clayton. It is because of school. I schedule my classes every year to get the most track time possible in but the classes that I have to take are only offered at certain times; not to mention I teach in Martinsville 3 days a week. This may come as a surprise to some people but there are things outside of Little 500 that I care a lot about. Also, I am not sure how that was relevant to your argument.

Third, I would really like to meet your Grandmother. She sounds awesome.

Lastly, in regards to the race last year I am going to say that I deserved to be an All Star for that race. A lot of things went our way that day (The Kappa/DG crash in turn 1, Theta’s going off the front and getting tired, KD pulling me around for the last 3 laps) and I have never denied that, but I rode smarter than anyone else did that day when I was on the bike. I used everything that I could to my advantage and in the end it worked out. Aside from one time early on my team worked hard to keep me in a good position, something that I have not taken for granted. Was there luck involved? Sure, but when is there not? Again, I never claimed to be the “strongest” or “most dominant” women’s rider that day but I was smart.

Good luck to everyone participating in ITTs tonight, should be fun!

Caroline

GP did you throw the HOF out there for Brown? Isn't that a bit early? She has one win and.......?

Todd said...

"one win and.....?"

Are you kidding me? One win is more than any of you guys have. She won, that is huge.

Anonymous said...

Really Todd? So everyone who has one win should be in the HOF? I am only pointing out the fact that you might need a bit more then one win to start talking about the HOF.

Todd said...

That's not what I said at all. I'm pointing out that you guys are scoffing at "one win" like those are so easy to come by. A win, and a win where she worked her ass off and then won the sprint, deserves some respect.

A win doesn't get you in the HOF, but it's extremely hard to get in without one.

Anonymous said...

Agreed, I think no one should even be considered for the HOF with out at least one win. My point is that she needs to do somethings in spring series and most likely win the race again to even have some HOF talk.

I would have graduated in 4 years but transferring here screwed me over...I would say that the cumulative Cutters gpa is atleast top 10 in comparison to other teams too. Don't get me wrong I love cycling but I give my attention to school whenever there is a conflict. Just be glad the cutters take time to do schoolwork because if they solely concentrated on cycling who knows how many wins this team would collectively have throughout their history. Not to mention I love to party as well; taking a week off the bottle before the race should be enough right?

If you've ever been in the women's race, it's not easy to sit in. We have had some serious talent through the years, and they still need to come out after 8-10 laps when it gets too fast. The women's race is very anerobic compared to the men's race. Everything is much harder on a Little 5 bike. There would be 10 riders doing what Caroline did last year if it was so easy to do. It was a smart race. However if she thinks she can get away with it again this year, she's not going to have many friends at the track. She's too strong to not be doing work. If she doesn't work you are going to see one of the slowest races in history because maybe everyone should just not work. Again, there is no issues with what she did last year. It was awesome. But you can't be the best rider and do that again or you lose all respect from your peers and are tarnishing a possible HOF legacy. No one wants to vote for a person that refuses to work once she is well established as the best rider in the race.

Geraint Parry said...

You should do what you can to win, that's the main aim right? If your best chance is to hide in the wheels and you do win then good luck to you. When was the last time someone was commended for riding at the front all day when they came 5th? Play to your strengths and really who cares too much about 'friends at the track'. This website indicates that the Cutters ain't too popular but I'd figure, as an example, that PDT would swap their 15th place and nice guy reputation for one of those Cutter rings.
As I see it in the Womens race two teams will want it to come to a sprint this year and I hope we see a preview of that in MnO.

Anonymous said...

What if every team decided that their best chance to win was to hide in the wheels? Basically that is what many top teams are thinking right now because they don't want Caroline riding wheels all day and slapping down a great final lap. If she wins again that way, then you're right. I just think karma will eventually catch up to her for not doing what she's capable of doing out there and keeping the race fast. I think she will pull more this year. Someone has to now that all the teams are talking about shutting it down if she tries that.

Anonymous said...

Stop the talk about who should pull and why. The race will naturally play out like it should and the strong TEAMS will come to the front and make it harder for the other riders and lesser teams. Don't try to take anything away from Caroline, she won the race. Period. If you say anything else you are just making excuses for your own loss. Step up or shut up.

Anonymous said...

Caroline riding the smartest race she could so she'd actually have some cards to play when it counted...hmm. Well. In bike racing, we call that "strategy." Welcome to the Little 500.

"she has one win and......?" Want to know how hard rings are to come by? Ask Matt Kain. If I'm correct, I believe Geraint's announcement during quals said he's the only current rider to have ridden in a race where someone other than the Cutters won.

If you're going to start tearing down individuals and scoffing at their accomplishments, at least have the balls to post under your name and not hide behind "Anonymous."

She's really smart if she can pull off the same race as last year. Bike racing usually involves teammates, and the sprinters can hide no problem. Let all the dumb teams pull and peter out. She's only got 3 people on her team. She has to sit in the whole race. Every team with only 3 riders and 1 all start should just sit the whole race if they are smart and want to win.

damn. sounds like the phi delts need to get younger and become assholes.

-The Phi Delts

Anonymous said...

So the Phi Delts think the Cutters are assholes? Uh oh. I think people are mistaking confidence with arrogance. Arrogance is when you talk like they do and lose.

Anonymous said...

I think that person meant, was to be considered for HOF you need to show some results outside of the race. My guess is that person is not bring down the achievement of winning, but rather expressing their view on what it takes to be considered for the HOF. (Example Spring Series results.)

I believe when you bring up the HOF that you have a much higher set of standards then just winning the race. Off the top of my head I can think of a few ladies that have won the race and accomplished wins in the spring series events that are not in the HOF. (Example Rieke)

Finally, since 2005 a different team has won the women's little 500. At four women a team that is 20 different people who have won rings in that time frame. So while it might be impossible on the mens side due to the Cutters, the women's side is wide open.

Anonymous said...

"So the Phi Delts think the Cutters are assholes?" I don't think the phi delts were saying this at all. The writer was simply responding to a statement from Geraint that this seems to be the consensus of the writers on this site.

Anonymous said...

WHy does everyone hate on the Cutters? I can tell you flat out I've never done anything to piss anyone off and I'm pretty sure no one on my team has either. Maybe a little shit talking but when it comes down to it nothing anyone else hasn't done. Quit being a bunch of pansies and maybe get to know one of us and see for yourself we are pretty decent guys. You can't go through life being jealous about everything can you? Damn its just a fucking bike race...
