Times are changin' at Womens L5

The new race director makes his first big change with the announcement that the 2012 Womens Little 500 will run under the lights at 7.30pm. I assume the strategy is to get some more spectators through the turnstyles and running the race under the lights will really add to the atmosphere. It will certainly be more raucous with the students having the chance to drink all day before the event and hopefully the flood-lights will be good enough prevent any increased danger. I imagine it'll be a lot of fun, look for Teter to take the chequered flag at around 9pm!
Below is an image of the 2012 race bikes. It has a classic feel to it.

I must say that is quite the ugly bike.

ABOUT TIME I"VE SAID THAT FOR YEARS!

Anonymous said...

Will it be harder to see wrecks from across the track? It's nice that it will be less windy most likely.

Todd said...

Love the move!

Anonymous said...

Anon 11am- I think the tents and mobs of people take care of that. Light will not be a problem.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe sunset is around 8:30pm that time of year. So really we are only looking at the last half hour under the lights. Could be really cool - especially if they bring back the fireworks just Chap is waving the checkered flag and DG is celebrating their second L5.

Please continue with the Womens race 'trashtalk'. We don't have enough of that on this board!

Anonymous said...

There is nowhere near enough light for TV coverage. Don't equate your being able to see in the dark with HDNet having sufficient light to shoot HD.

Anonymous said...

1:54 is correct. Remember the lights are aimed at the infield not the track. Re aiming them would be expensive and additional lights are pretty expensive too.

Anonymous said...

That would suck if it wasn't a good pic for HD as that's how I watch

Did DG get some new riders that are faster? That would be helpful.

Anonymous said...

Is CVK coming back this year? If so, you can just give her some flash lights to hold up while she is saluting the crowd and that should help light the way.

Anonymous said...

Bailey should move the mens race to under the lights as well. That would be even more epic and draw a larger crowd then the womans race.

Anonymous said...

Have the men go Friday and the women on Saturday.

Anonymous said...

Definitely would like to see the men's race at night. Both races at night. HD net would be fine. The lights at Armstrong are great. ITTs and team pursuit have never been an issue and the whole stadium is lit up, not just the field.

Anonymous said...

Plus it would give them more time to prepare the track between the two races. I think Jordan should hold a meeting where teams discuss the logistics and then each team gets one vote.

Anonymous said...

Best women's rider this year? Any takers? Lauren Gowdy is supposedly hurtin people CVK style.

Anonymous said...

Hutchenson, Caughlin, Ottenweiler, Phillips, Doogs. That is all.

Anonymous said...

Yes, she is sure to tear people up in Little 50.

David said...

Double check the start time for the women. IUSF has it as 6:00PM on the website.

Hank said...

Better watch out for Kathleen from theta...she's got a year under her belt now

Anonymous said...

@2:19 No, it's true. she is the fastest female Little 5er on campus right now. You'll find out when you ride with her. Laugh now, cry later bitches.

Anonymous said...

who is coaching Theta this year? Kathleen has a lot of power that's for sure.

Anonymous said...

voting is stupid, little 5 riders just complain about everything, none of them are worth a lick as cyclists

Anonymous said...

Tell that to Eric Young or CVK. Even if you have won a few bikes races (doubtful), no one cares about your mild personal success except you and your mom. At least there is a nice following in Little 5 where scores of people come to watch and care about the outcome if their team wins. And it appears to me that you are "complaining" calling things stupid, and trying to make yourself look better than them. I hope that made you feel better about irrelevant self.

Wes said...

If you really want to make the race interesting set it up like a points race with sprints every 10 or so laps.

Anonymous said...

what good would that do? There usually only 4-5 teams still there after 20 laps and they attack eachother constantly on exchanges so essentially that already happens.

lll5 said...

rumor has it that patches is coaching theta

Anonymous said...

Patches can't even coach himself

Anonymous said...

Great move doing it under the lights (mens race should stay during the day). Teter & Theta sprint it out for the win. Not sure there are any other teams that can hang......

Anonymous said...

Was theta on the lead lap last year?

Anonymous said...

nobody but cutters was on the lead lap last year both friday and saturday

Anonymous said...

theta was 5 laps down at the end

Anonymous said...

Does anyone have an idea what wing-it might look like this year? Definitely a great leader in Abigail.

Anonymous said...

They are the hardest training team in Little 500 for sure on the women's side. I heard they did the Hilly and then did a cyclocross race right after. If the series events had any riding in them besides a few meters or laps, they probably would have beaten Teter and their legs were tired from training so much. They have probably the 3 best coaches on the track and are fired up!

Anonymous said...

They advanced more riders than any other team in Street Sprints and one of their rookies made it to the semi-finals.

Anonymous said...

So anon 4:49 can fall under the Wing-it coaching staff. Any real opinions on the team

Anonymous said...

If the race was only a 200 meter sprint, Teter would still win with Hutchenson. Its not a 200 meter sprint, its a 100 lap relay race, but kudos to Wing It. I also don't understand how they would've beaten Teter if there was more riding when their legs were tired? 3 coaches? Tom, Sarah, and Ren-Jay?

Anonymous said...

Bri is their other coach and she is also the reason Teter is good in the first place. I think Teter does the same workouts Bri did when she raced for them.

Anonymous said...

Bri raced for Teter? Did they win any of those years? Why is she helping Wing It?

Anonymous said...

She got 2nd and 4th or something. She was the ITT record holder, hall of famer, and track national champion for IUCC but was unable to win the sprint in Little 5. She also had the team pursuit record that stood until Teter barely beat it this year. With Tom's knowledge and expertise, Sarah's experience and having won the race and Bri, it is an all star staff and Moeller is a great sprinter and was offered a chance to do track for IU but she turned it down to win this race. Their rookie is an experienced triathlete who did very well in the fall series and of course Abigail. Oh and they have an indoor state of the art training center with power meters. Need I say more?

Anonymous said...

I would hardly call the new record "barely" beating the old one. I believe it was at least 10 seconds, but you may want to double check. Those coaches may all be very qualified, were they around last year? Just looked at the results on IUSF's website, Teter didn't win until 2005 and Bri didn't do ITTs, did she graduate? Who was their coach all of those years? And still why is Bri helping Wing it? From watching the race on HDNet, I believe they had that training center last year as well. What do the other teams have? All of the Teter girls must be on roids if Wing It has all of that and didn't even finish on the same lap, but made it out of the big crash with Army and Alpha Chi Omega.

Anonymous said...

Bri had the ITT record too, but Kristi Hewitt, also of Wing-it holds that and the fast lap at Quals record.

Anonymous said...

The teter record was by over 10 seconds, but Bri did it when the wind was out and the track was shitty. That right there is about a 20 second difference. She is probably the 2nd fastest Little 5er ever behind Jenn Wangerin.

Anonymous said...

You mean the big crash where Army took Alpha Chi down.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtiT4syg034

Anonymous said...

Did you find the weather conditions for that day somewhere online? It's amazing what you can look up these days. I'm sure Bri is very proud of her own team for beating her record. Why is she helping Wing It? I didn't know there was a fast lap at Quals record? Is there a list of the Quals lap times so we can compare how much faster she was than Teter when they set the Quals record? Or compare her time to Jess Sapp's who was an amazing sprinter. And how did you calculate that 20 second difference for Team Pursuit? Why hasn't any other team beat her record if it was such a bad track that day? I'm sure within the last 6/7/8 years the track had to be in better condition. Why can't we pay credit to where credit is due?

Anonymous said...

I graduated like a hundred years ago. Let's hear about who's good in 2011/12.

Oh, and for the record, it was more than 10 seconds and from what I hear, they were absolutely flying! Kudos to the Teter girls.

And I help out with Wing It, because they are the coolest kids on campus. Except for that Abigail chick, of course. Way too many sparkles for my taste.

loving the conversation about the women's race, spices things up... but turning down track to win little 5? not sure about the correlation there... sorry to bring the boys into the women's convo, but young, west, a couple young cutters, rafferty, i think those dudes are doing alright in their little 5 careers after racing for iucc. and props to wing it for doing cyclocross after the hilly, but they had better be talking the talk while they have the chance because the track's a whole different ballgame and the teter girls know that. not to mention caughlin and gowdy got a lot of racing under their belts this summer while everyone else was probably hanging by the pool or something, so i wouldn't be so quick to talk... but please keep on doing so because this is interesting

Todd said...

The "coolest kids on campus" rarely win Little 500.

Anonymous said...

Way to pick up on sarcasm, idiot

Anonymous said...

"but they had better be talking the talk while they have the chance because the track's a whole different ballgame and the teter girls know that."

It seems to me that wing-it are the ones who are not "talking", they seem to be "doing"

Anonymous said...

I love that wing-it is training! That's a team on the up and up for sure. Teter is definitely training. Theta seems to be training. DG is in action. Are there anyother teams out there that are consistently training at least 5 days a week? It's the 25th, let's see some kind of intensity from the field.

Anonymous said...

...if you think wing it is not talking the talk you may want to check out their facebook page...lolz

Anonymous said...

I think some of these posters have been drinking too much from thy cup of toughness.

Anonymous said...

DG is Overrated. Their girls are putting on weight and can't ride more than a three lap set. Maybe that will change with Pam as coach ? My money is on teter, again. With Chris W at the helm and good riders I just don't care what you do it's not going to happen unless they get wound up in a crash. Crazier things have happened though just have to wait til April

Anonymous said...

This thread has really made me laugh. Can't wait to get back to Bloomington for the race. I'm glad the Wing-it team and smattering of fans have figured out how to post on this blog. If they could pedal as fast as they run their mouths, they might -- might! -- be able to crack into the top 5 this year, which, correct me if I'm wrong, would be a first for them. The way they've been trash talking, you'd think they were the Cutters (only without the wins to back it up). But please carry on! Other teams are actually focused on winning (and have been, in spite of your egomaniacal coach and "superior training").

Anonymous said...

They "cracked" the top 5 last year. You have the right to remain silent, that way you don't sound so despicably stupid.

Anonymous said...

Forgive me, they did come in fifth last year. The point still stands. That is hardly the stellar finish to justify this annoying amount of hype. And "You have the right to remain silent"? Are you a police officer? Thank you for granting me my due process of law. I had no idea we had a fifth amendment. Also, "despicably" is a confusing word choice given the context. Perhaps you should stop procrastinating at 12:38am and get back to your homework.

Anonymous said...

Annnoying amount of hype? They weren't even mentioned until like comment 30, a week after the original post.

Anonymous said...

It seems to me that you are the person with the problem. Wing-it is a viable team with a dedicated cast of coaches and riders and fans. This obviously bothers you to the point where you have to start insulting them.

Anonymous said...

enough of the women, lets talk about the mens race, the event that people actually go to watch and enjoy watching...

Anonymous said...

Finally, the sexist segue.

Anonymous said...

I usually only pay attention to the men's race. But the annoying and unjustified amount of hype coming from the Wing-it team has been really intriguing, given they've never been in the top 4 (thank you Anon @12:38am for clearing up their buzz-worthy fifth place finish last year). Here's more background -- one previous comment mentioned Wing-it's Facebook page, so I naturally checked it out. Absolutely hysterical! The things they were saying about themselves was really entertaining, and that has clearly translated into this blog. I'm only sad they chose to make the group private. Why did they do that? Maybe they became embarrassed by their own trash talk?

Anonymous said...

"given they've never been in the top 4"

Clever!

I just love it when someone comes on accusing others of exactly what they are doing. If you are so fucking brilliant quit hiding behind "Anonymous" and enlighten us as to your credentials.

Anonymous said...

Couldn't someone just shake some car keys at this person to keep them pacified so the grown-up adult world can move on without their mind numbing comments?

Anonymous said...

Ignore him, anything else he may have to say on any matter whatsoever has all the urgency of taking dating advice from Ted Bundy or culinary tips from Jeffrey Dahmer.

Anonymous said...

Goodness, you guys get defensive pretty easily. The question still stands, though: why'd you restrict your Facebook group after your own trash talking?

Anonymous said...

Let's not forget that Wing it dominated the series events last year and lost the race and this year was the opposite so anything can happen on raceday.

Bob said...

Who really gives a shit about their Facebook page. It is obvious that you have a problem with Tom, unless you were referring to Bri or Sarah as “maniacal”, in which case you should be more careful because either of them could kick your ass on or off a bike. Why don’t you take it up with him and in the mean time STFU.

Anonymous said...

What trash talking?

Anonymous said...

Bri the 2nd best rider of all time? I am not sure she is the 2nd best rider to have ridden for Teter. CVK and Rieke come to mind. Rieke is a completely different style of rider so hard to compare, but she did beat the ITT record and won the other series events plus a race win.

Anonymous said...

CVK (supported by great Teter team):

Race
2011: 1st, leads team to lap entire field by ~1.5 laps, first time in 24-year history of women's race
2010: 1st, by ~1/2 lap

ITT
2011: 1st (by 4 sec)
2010: 1st

Miss 'n Out
2011: 1st
2010: 1st

Team Pursuit
2011: 1st, breaks track record by 13 seconds, all 4 girls across line
2010: 1st

Quals
2011: 2nd
2010: 2nd
2009: 1st (track record)

Anonymous said...

I think the thing we forget about Bri was the fact she also had a VERY good team behind her. However, poor choices in using those weapons lead to a 2nd place finish and Chris becoming the coach the next year. The team was strong enough to win the following year with Rieke instead of Bri.

Men's race predictions???

Wing It
PDT
Cutters
Delts
Sigma Chi

Anonymous said...

How about a women's race prediction instead:

1. Teter
2. Theta
3. Wing-It
4. DG
5. Dana V's new team
6. Army
7. Kappa
8. Chi-Omega (they could rise higher)
9. AGD
10.Maybe Pi Phi?

Anonymous said...

Chi-O for the win. Without GP holding them back, they are destined for great things!

Anonymous said...

*oops, meant AXO with Kelsey Tharnstrom

Anonymous said...

Not sure of the final results but I think these five teams will be at the top. I can't see anyone else winning the race.

Cutters
PDT
Sigma Chi
BKB
Delts

Anonymous said...

Cutters WILL not win this year. That is all

Anonymous said...

Shouldn't your emphasis be on the NOT? Maybe a Freudian slip by putting it on the WILL?

Todd said...

Just an fyi: you can only control your race, so you might want to say that your team WILL win. Obsession with the Cutters has cost more than one team a race win.

And just to be clear, the Cutters are still the favorites.

Anonymous said...

did 4:18 say Phi Phi maybe top 10? Did you notice how they lost a half lap everytime Caroline got off the bike? They would be lucky to be 25th.

Anonymous said...

1) Kappa Alpha Theta
2) Delta Tau Delta
3) Teter
4) Cutters
5) Wing-It
6) Phi Delta Theta
7) Chi Omega
8) Phi Kappa Psi
9) Sigma Alpha Mu
10) Army

Anonymous said...

I heard CVK is studying abroad right now and is planning to come back for 2012, especially since its now under the lights. Anyone know anything about this?

Anonymous said...

If the Phi Delts ride like they did last year, they will win. Especially if they can get Grey Goat to do 1 lap bursts for them again. Everyone should be following them, not the Cutters.

Frat hard.

Anonymous said...

Count on Phi Delts to do something stupid and blow it. Is david ellis still around? If not, FIJI is screwed. RJ Stuart is good, but beyond that Delts is just ok (He'll have to ride almost half the race). Sigma Chi will be strong, Cutters will be strong but not strong enough to win, BKB will be strong, Beta will be up there as well. Not sure what to think about CRU just yet.

And to Todd, I don't know why you insist on always mentioning that the Cutters are the favorite. I don't think that past success automatically makes you the favorite. For example, once Peyton Manning was ruled out for what looks to be the entire season, everyone pretty much knew the Colts would be a very weak team. Can you think of a rider no longer with the Cutters whose absence from the 2012 line-up will make a drastic difference? Cutters will be up there, but i think its a stretch to call them a favorite. Phi Delts will be strong as long as they dont screw up.

Anonymous said...

Sometimes a team's abilities are greater than the capacity of its individuals combined abilities. It's like a function in math. You don't necessarily get y=x. Perhaps the strength of a team should also be factored in when considering race predictions rather than just the individuals within the respective team.

Derpidy derp derp!

OH MY GOD!! My sense of logic is overwhelming me aggghhhh! I don't think I can be on such a mind numbing blog and try to actually think at the same time!!!!!!!

Tod just got 33rd overall in Ironman Florida in his first ironman ever including all the pros. 6th without the pros. Ran a 3:11 marathon after 2.5 mile swim, and 112 mile bike. I may be a minute or 2 off on the run time, but hat's off to Todd! Good luck in Kona!

Not to mention he has been behind the winning teams fence for 7 consecutive men's and women's victories. strategizing and actually knowing what lap everyone is on. (5 Cutters and 2 teter)

Anonymous said...

sorry Todd, not Tod. I can't spell either.

For anon. Nov. 9, 6:02 p.m.:

CvK has graduated and is working in Minneapolis, but will definitely be coming back, not to ride, but to cheer on the Teter girls. No hype: just the usual training hard and often, coached ably by Woj, three talented, experienced returning girls joined by Lisa H. (won street sprints) plus strong new rookies.
