+1 on the comment about some of the Men's A riders downgrading. Did you just think it would be cool to say you were an A rider? Or are you trying to keep your legs fresh for the track by dropping off the back of the pack every race.
Yeah only two riders finished at LW, the rest dropped after 1 or 2 laps and I think almost all got pulled from the crit. Why would anyone want to subject themselves to that?
Accountability for what? If they show up they will drop out half way through the race. Don't waste your gas money, stay home and train instead of getting dropped.
It's early in the season. While some schools view A's as the reason for their education/scholarship ..others use it as training for bigger races later in the year and summer.
those using it as training for "bigger" races normally can finish the collegiate races - if not, then they are not doing "bigger" races. the bloomington crit and joe schmo's parking lot crit do not qualify as "bigger" races. Eric Young did bigger races. and he finished collegiate races. none of the IUCC guys are even Cat 1's, ergo they cannot enter "bigger" races, which are mostly Pro/1
Some people also like to have fun and truly don't care. Either that or they care too much and want to look cool. That's entirely their prerogative. If you cared so much about how IU was being represented, why not go out and race yourself?
but race B's until you can hang with A's. Simple solution. It's blowing my mind that people are getting dropped from these races. We used to win the A's races and have 7 guys that could be top 10 in any given race. What the hell happened? Did Marian hire a team of supermen and other teams too? or is the talent level that far off from before? I know Nationals is hard to score and do well but these regional races we should be competing for the wins. Now the mindset seems to be that Marian is too good and only Young can compete. Was Marian just not good in the late 90's?
"We used to win the A's races and have 7 guys that could be top 10 in any given race. What the hell happened? Did Marian hire a team of supermen and other teams too? ..... Was Marian just not good in the late 90's?"
I think it is an issue that they are that good now mixed with a lot of new As this year. How many current IU A riders were As last year?
Give them a chance to learn and develop through the season. It was one race!
Todd it was one race but it's not like they are going to be doing other ones. These riders focus on L5, not collegiate races. If they go to one or two races a year why should they be A's? So they can pretend that they are better than they really are? So they can say, "I'm an A, but I can't do collegiate because it interferes with L5" Seems like a big ego trip for some mediocre riders. Getting dropped after 3 laps in a crit doesn't just happen because it's the first race of the season.
you can be good at both - the IU team was 2nd at nationals in 2004 and all of the riders on that team were L5ers with the exception of Michael Kehrberg, who was a pro
Anon: 6:17pm - the 2004 IU team had a pro female cyclist that won the crit that year. Let's not downplay the importance a rider like Jenn has on the overall team omnium.
don't forget Bahati either, 3rd in the RR is big points too. kerhberg was 8th in the crit also. women are clearly important - 4 women in the top 20 in the RR (8, 12, 17, 19 -3 of them L5er). what women are there now?? none
5:57 - are there other riders begging to fill the roles of these riders getting dropped after three laps? If not, nurture what you have and support them when they race.
Anon 1:20: As a mid/late-90s Marian rider, I can tell you that the level has stepped up. I was a good regional cat 2 in those days and a Midwestern collegiate race was more like a moderate 2-3 race -- I'd win a couple every season. The Midwest now has a very strong collegiate scene and the A race is more like a fast 1-2 race -- with not too many places for people to hide since the leading groups get whittled down pretty fast.
Having said that, these guys will get a lot more training benefit by riding a complete B race than only 10min of an A race. And the "early season" excuse doesn't hold water: If you're getting dropped and pulled in March then the same is gonna happen in June and July.
the "early season" excuse also doesn't hold water because these guys are presumably training for Little 500, which is coming up in a month and a half. they should be fit already
It was 2002 that IU sent just 5 guys and 2 girls and finish 2nd overall at Track Nats. I would think that would go down as the most impressive IU showing at Nats. and gutsy to all those involved.
Marian had a lot of cat 1's and 2's back in the day but no pros. In the late 90's the IU team fielded a team of several Little 5'ers and Allistar Sponsel who was a great climber, and semi weak flat rider. They scored points with nobody getting in the top 9 except 4th in the time trial. Sponsel was 10th in the road race.
So a team of cat 3's can be top 5 in the country. They just need more commitment and belief that it's very possible.
I don't know if "gutsy" is the word I would use. That team had Weir, Bahati, Wagerin, Vanes. All pros.
Between Weir, Bahati, and Jen the team won 5 of the 8 individual events. That team probably could have finished 2nd with three riders. Now that's gutsy.
The current IU cycling scene doesn't have this level of quality right now...hence not competing on the national scene.
I look at "early season" differently for IU guys. As has been pointed out, most of these guys have only been riding with their Little 5 teams. They beat up on a very small pool of people and they think they can do it to a field of As (they can't). One race will teach them that lesson. If they repeatedly get dropped then I'll concede this point.
Second point is one I already addressed, what are the other options? At this time, it sounds like the only other option is to not field an As squad. That's silly.
Anon: 11:34 - I think you are spot on with the commitment and belief. However, perhaps the current riders are content with focusing on L5 and not worrying about IUCC.
Nothing wrong with that and they shouldn't be bashed for it.
they should focus on one or the other, not both. If you start trying to do both you start trying to split your time with two different teams and two different and opposite workout plans. L5 guys dont need to be doing 60,70,80 mile road races, while the A's guys do need that. IU hasn't been a force in nationals because yes everyone here is content with preparing for "the greatest college weekend", but it would be nice to see IUCC have a good showing and A's that can finish the race over and over again and focus solely on collegiate.
Todd your ignorance on this topic is appalling. It is better to have them compete as B's and score points for IU. Having all these riders drop out of races doesn't help them and it doesn't help the club. They need to leave their ego at home and compete at a feasible level. I'm not saying they should all be B's. Guys like Depasse and Stuart know what they're doing but the majority of the other A's don't deserve to be in that race. If they train hard then at some point they will be able to compete with the A's but until then they shouldn't be in those races.
12:41 - That's like saying, our high school varsity team is going to stink anyway, so let's throw them on the JV squad so they can win once in a while. That approach is weak.
Todd, it's not the same scenario. You can win your conference (albeit that would be weird) by riding b's, you can't win a single conference game by not fielding a varsity team. We could have a group of winning pros do A's for the women and all B's for the men you can score those needed points to hang with Marian because we always have numbers where they usually have higher end talent. Think age group sports, not team high school athletics.
Anon 12:53 - considering the majority of races conflict with L5 activities and the majority of riders will not be participating in IUCC...your point and this entire debate is moot.
IU should play to it's strength....track cycling. No conflict with L5, transferable skills between L5/track racing, velodrome within an hours drive.
Only takes a few motivated riders and a little alumni support. You've got a number of folks who have been successful on past IU track teams close by. Pam, Bri, Ewing, Weir, Simmeon (spl?) all have multiple podium finishes and I'm sure would be willing to volunteer.
Combine that with a Ken or Tom and you could have a nice recipe for ongoing succuss for IU on the track.
Stuart, Depasse, Graham, West (and all the other A's I forgot), would all run a train on the B's field. Their options are: hang on with riders that are better than you for as long as you can, or ride the most boring race of your life in the Bs field.
Some A's should stay in the A field obviously. But getting dropped 3 laps into a crit and on the first lap of a RR is pathetic. Downgrading to B's wouldn't be sandbagging. It would be riding in their correct category. I won't name names but they are in way over their heads.
Results from lindsey Wilson for A's: 2 finished, 8 dropped out. That's unacceptable. http://mwccc.googlegroups.com/attach/cd0b6e1abbbce11f/Mens+A+RR.pdf?view=1&part=16
Todd, you have the wrong definition of sandbagging. Sandbagging is having the talent to ride higher but riding lower to score or make money. These guys are not able to hang with the fiel so the 2 that finished should be the only 2 riding.
It sounds like the talent around IU has gotten a lot stronger while IU stays the same or has refocused on track. I think the best idea is too really focus on track nats then!
4:34 - I did not quit after one race which is what your advice was. This thread is annoying because it wreaks of the same whiny "I can't win so I don't want to play," attitudes as the guys who wanted to ban Eric last year and Chris this year.
At this point Marian is better than IU, no secret. There is no shame in losing. It happens.
Go screw yourself Todd, it's about rules. Something you Cutters, and a couple other coaches, no names, Tom and CB know nothing about. The fact is Rules are rules get it thru it head and deal u arrogant SOB. Think it a bit obsessed with this, all join in , get a LIFE!
Ha ha. Whiny emotional college boy. Do you call the cops when you see someone going 35 in a 30? Welcome to the real world where decisions are made based on circumstances not rules. The rulebook stated that there is an appeals process, therefore no rules were broken. Quals shouldn't count toward eligibility anyway. Thats an outdated dumb rule.
9:39 is exactly right! "The rulebook stated that there is an appeals process, therefore no rules were broken." If someone appealed and West got pulled, that is part of the process as well. Is he really out?
Appeals board is full of it, blocking people from being in Little 5 just because they are too good of an athlete and rode one lap in quals is despicable. Let him ride
Since the A's are sucking it up, lets get some thoughts on spring series events? they just got posted so teams should be figuring out which events they want to do. Todd your thoughts?
Young skirted right on the line (or across the line depending on your viewpoint) of an ambiguously written rule. West is clearly ineligible under the rule. It may be a dumb rule, but it's not really open for a different interpretation/argument whereas the PRO rule was.
Wait, I'm confused by West not being eligible. I was under the assumption that he filed a protest last year and IUSF granted that protest. Why would IUSF not stand by that decision? The protest process is pretty clear in the manual. That's pretty amazing that IUSF would reverse the decision.
Does that mean all rider protest are available for review? Can any rider request the protests that IUSF passed and then challenge them? I would be interested in seeing what IUSF passes and doesn't pass.

Great job to most of the riders! Especially the Mens D and Womens B/C fields!
Need to get some women up to the A field and have some of the Mens A's finish the races or downgrade.
