2012 Little 500....the long odds

A few folks have asked about the pre-season 2012 Little 500 odds as generated (seemingly randomly) in the previous years (2009, 2010). Now these thoughts aren’t exactly based on knowledge for obvious reasons but are more to start the debate from people who might actually know! Have at it....

Womens Little 500- April 20th 2012

2/1 Teter- Three time champs know how to win and replace CvK with Hutch, which is as good as it could get.

5/1 Delta Gamma- Doogs and Phillips with plenty talent in waiting looking to put such a strong show in 2010 into a big result

5/1 Kappa Alpha Theta- Surprisingly poor result in 2011 doesn’t reflect their talent and dedication. Look for them to bounce back strong.

6/1 Wing-it- The facilities and expertise leading the team have got to get this talented group on the podium soon, right?

10/1 Kappa Kappa Gamma. Always there….

15/1 Delta Zeta- Big surprise from last year surely on the uptick.

16/1 Army Cycling- Otteweiler returns as one of the strongest riders on track but losing 3 strong seniors will be tough to replace.

18/1 Kappa Delta- Coach Norm knows how to organize a house that embraces the race so will be around the top ten.

25/1 The Field- No clue but don’t see anyone else making the top 5.

Mens Little 500- April 21st 2012

3/1 Cutters- 5 time consecutive champs but only 2 returning rings…unless ‘Patches’ jumps back in…. The team to beat as ever.

7/2 Phi Delta Theta- Four returning riders, have been very aggressive in the past two years. Steve Sharp will battle RJ Stuart to be BMOtrack. 1st or 33rd is the mantra and they need a win!

5/1 Delta Tau Delta- Will miss James Coudright but RJ Stuart was amongst the strongest in 2011 and the team will surely continue to be aggressive.

5/1 Sigma Chi- Fish and Morrow are back and may just win it!

6/1 Beta Theta Pi- Bad race in 2011 but should bounce back with a strong squad of dudes.

10/1 Black Key Bulls. Rex Raffety in the house and on the track!

12/1 Hoosier Climber?- I’m assuming they will continue to improve

12/1 CRU cycling- Not sure what happened in the 2011 race but they seemed to have a good organization and some talent

15/1 Acacia- A nice renaissance in 2011 will hopefully enthuse the house to get the program back on track

15/1 Delta Chi- On the upward track…may be the surprise team in 2012

15/1 Sigma Nu- Fratstars amazingly took the pole in 2011 and talked a good game. Can they back it up in 2012?

20/1 The Field- That’s all I got…anyone else out there to challenge?

Phi Delt should have better odds. Don't they have 12 5th year seniors all coming back for the W? That has to be some type of record in and of it's own. What's their average age? I would like to see them take it, love their first or last approach. It will be an aggressive race for sure! Teams better start training, hard, now

What about Pi Phi?!?

Hmm I totally forgot about Pi Phi..I guess that demonstrates Caroline's enormous positive influence. Prove me wrong and get back in the top ten!

Shame about HC? They are a good group of guys!

7/2 odds are great! Especially for a race as chaotic as Little 5.

No HC? Will any of their riders jump on the Cutter train?

Anonymous said...

what team is scott stewart on? he is legit.

Anonymous said...

Oh the phi delt train, always training hard, but never good enough to win. Way to many guys on their squad to really focus on their top teammates and make something happen

Anonymous said...

tim nixon supposedly wants to ride for the cutters but with aaron baer returning too they'll both have to sit out a year

Anonymous said...

AKAK took fifth last year and has every rider coming back...should be higher then ninth

My money is on Rex if his team can get him to the last lap. He has work very hard all year at the MTV and has perfected his sprint.

Anonymous said...

These rankings are completely bogus. Geraint I respect you man but this stuff is just silly.
Cutters are falling to pieces, Depasse is driving the team into the ground because he can't live up to the pressure of being Eric Young Jr., and I can’t say I blame him, those are big shoes to fill. Patches hates his guts and is barely a member of the "team" at all. I see the Cutters as a disappointment this year.
Phi Delt got the edge because they have apparently worked out a system to give their rides 5 years of eligibility each, this nice loophole plus a few hefty dose of EPO may be enough to take the PDT special to the top.
Delts? Really Delts? ‘Best team to ever finish second’ and coach Courtney Bishop are sure to end right on the wheel of whoever is 2nd on lap 200. Apparently they are investing in some fancy new bike room so they have a fun place to inject all the new things James got them since last year. Stuart has no supporting cast and can't carry a team by himself
Sig Chi- Fish and Will Farrel are starring in a new buddy comedy about the antics of the creating a Little 500 team from a bunch of rag tag misfits, fighting adversity and coming out on top against all odds. Expect them to win in April and the film in theaters by July.
Beta- They will fall over, a lot. They will fall over so often they will give Sigma Pi a run for their money in the, "most cinders eaten off the track," award. Expect crashes from them on laps 18, 43, 48, 102, 135, and 197.
The rest of the field- Acacia will end up over dosing on coke and missing the race, D Chi will accidentally ride for ATO, and Korean Legstrong will pull through for second.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the truth.

On to random bar trivia:

At bars this summer, I was told on multiple occasions that Sigma Chi was working some magic behind the scenes and will be the class of the field this year.

Is this true or false? And no this was not Tom talking.

The follow up comment each time to my retort was, if it wasn't for Young, we would have won the last two years!

Interesting. Debate.

Anonymous said...

Let the smack talking begin! This is always entertaining stuff to read. Can't we just all get a long though? I'm hoping the interactions amongst teams this year will be more amenable than in years past. Who knows we all actually might end up having fun. Think about it!

Todd said...

This is going to be a great year because with Eric behind the fence, other teams really believe they can win. For those thinking the Cutters are falling apart because Eric's gone, remember that the 5 races pre-Eric ended with the Cutters on top of the podium 3 times.

As Patches says, it can be a fun year.

Also, to the comments regard Tom above, I honestly don't see him saying that.

Anonymous said...

Honestly, I can’t think of a single year in the last 5 years that teams other than cutters didn’t think they could win. Eric's talent were certainly impressive but, while he was a powerhouse on the track, the race is about much more than a single individual. The supporting cast of riders, coaching, and alums that the cutters assemble year in and year out is what got them to their impressive run and it is what will keep them as contenders for years to come.

As for other team's mentalities, this is the beauty of Little 5 - the "never say die" attitude of the field's elite teams. Each year for the last half decade, teams have taken the track despite their odds with a desire to succeed. While during that time they were unsuccessful, it didn’t mean that they weren’t still passionate and motivated enough to believe that victory could be in the cards.

What is so interesting is that over the last 5 years, we have seen the rise of a number of prominent greek teams and the fostering of even greater competition in an expanded Bloomington Cycling community.

This year, I will agree, the field is wide open, probably for the first time since 2009 or 2007. Look for an exciting cast of characters to take the track from a whole host of up and coming greek and independent houses alike.

Anonymous said...

3 out of the last 5 races, the Cutters almost lost but had the best sprinter by far each time the race got close. So take away the best sprinter in history and its basically the same Cutters from 2 years ago but without a last lap automatic winner. They are going to have to try to attack. It should be a great race.

dana v is riding for the win

Anonymous said...

That would be something to see a pure sprinter and a team of non cyclists win on their first try in Little 500. Those would be some long odds but I'd put them in the top 10.

Anonymous said...

@ anon 2:49pm... who would that be?

Anonymous said...

For the 2 HC riders to sit out a year would idiotic. Their only chance at riding for a competitive team is to grab up the potentially athletic riders on teams that didn't qualify for last years race and aren't fielding a team this year aka Jeff Waller, and other similar riders.

Anonymous said...

I was talking about Dana V's team being top 10.

Anonymous said...

who's dana v?

Anonymous said...

to anon @ 10:41am

Cutters try to attack this year? Doubtful. They didn't attack last year with Young so what makes them more likely to attack this year? Everyone on the Cutters have a limited number of matches and you don't think the other teams are going to try to capitalize on that? Depasse will sprint and Patches/Harbison will lap eat but if shit gets rough theyll have to burn depasse or patches to get back leaving a not so strong end game. Depasse is fast but below the strength of Dick or Sharp.

to anon @ 9:43
PDT? Definitely going to be competitive no doubt, as they always are. However, unknown fact is that Chris West has no eligibility this year. So there goes 1 of their 2 options for sprinter. While having 12-20 riders on the squad might seem like an advantage I see it as quite the opposite. Team gets spread too thin, and the load gets shared too easily over 15 different guys pulling.

To anon @ 4:58
I believe Dana V is the former Teter rider who sat out last year. While she is a strong rider the chance that she finds 3 other passionate girls is completely impossible. Her only chance is to pull a Caroline Brown.

Anonymous said...

Hahaha I think it is hilarious that the above said that Harbison can eat laps.

Anonymous said...

@12:37am
Some points you missed. Cutters crashed last year and were a lap down and had the best sprinter in Little 5 history. I would call the fact that they got their lap back a pretty solid attack effort wise. Once they got their lap back, there was no need to attack with Young waiting for the finish. They were defending attacks instead. With no true sprinter, Cutters will need to use as many matches as possible in the last 50 laps to try to soften up some contending teams and make their sprinters have to chase. Once the sprinters have been softened up, then DePasse has a good a chance as any to either pull a quarter lap ahead or be strong for the last lap while others are tired. DePasse is stronger than those 2 guys you mentioned for longer harder efforts.

2. Having 15 guys in a paceline is great training as long as you don't have to wait up for the slow ones every day. The group probably needs to form 2 pacelines when it gets hard. It's a lot of talent to choose from and should continuously make them contenders.

3. Their only chance is to pull a Caroline Brown? Dana can't ride like Brown. She could probably beat her in a 1 lap sprint and that's it.

It's typically very easy to eat laps in the men's race until the last 5 years. There seems to be more late race attacking going on because of Young being too good at sprinting. That may calm down now that he's gone. Teams that have a legitimate shot may now want to wait for the sprint instead of going for broke with 30 to go.

Anonymous said...

rj half is going to win the sprint

Anonymous said...

@10:52
While the Cutter's were "aggressive" in getting back their dropped lap, they were definitely not attacking (unless you're talking about Young's sets). Check the footage and I'm sure you'll find that the Cutter's can thank another team for "attacking" to get their 2 laps back and the Cutter's just capitalized on that train.

I agree that PDT (especially in the Spring) splits up their team into halfs or even thirds for rides. But a team only has so much money right? So maybe with 15 guys they all can't go race the road races before Little 5 and do all the travel because the team has no money. I know PDTs bike room is among the best but I can't imagine they have enough to cover the team efficiently. Would you rather have a team of six and pay them like 10 ppl or have a team of 15 and pay them like 10 ppl? I'd rather do 6.

I didn't mean to say that Dana could ride like Brown and I agree that she cant. I only meant that if Dana fields a team she's got no other choice than to TRY to ride like Brown.

I see your point on the change in the game now that Young is gone as far as the last 50 laps are concerned. I'm going to take your point and change it a little bit. I think Young made teams think more strategically throughout the race, not just in the last 50 laps. I don't think that will calm down. I mean Delts threw out a fake exchange (not saying it worked) in last years race way before the 100 lap mark if I'm correct. Point being that regardless of the last 50 laps, the first 150 will be just as strategic for teams now that they've FINALLY understood tactics (or think they have).

Todd said...

It's very early to start predicting the dynamics of the race, but I think most teams are going to be content to sit and wait until the end. Having Eric forced everyone to risk more the last two years. With him gone, there isn't the perceived threat in the field to warrant strong teams to take the risk.

Anonymous said...

@ 2:05 Zach actually got the gap that started them on their path to getting their lap back. What I meant by attacking is that they couldn't attack once they crashed so their "attack" was spent trying to get their lap back. Who was their 2 laps back? you mean 2 teams trying to get from 1 lap down to even or was a team 2 laps down that caught? I didn't see that happen. I also agree that it's not just 50 laps, that was just an example of teams strategizing to try to upend Cutters. Lastly I agree with Todd that it may be a field sprint this year if teams are intent in not taking risks since they have a chance on the last lap. Alas, it's all speculation until the race actually happens. These are just tendencies based on what most likely might happen if everything went as advertised.

Anonymous said...

delts phi delt cutters sigma chi all don't have sprinters this year... stuart west/sharp, depasse, morrow/fish are all strong riders but not sprinters - probably going to be a crap shoot for position and luck with those guys sprinting

2) Some teams know how to close out races, others don't.

as for the sprinting situation, stuart west/sharp, depasse, morrow/fish are all the best on their teams and the obvious sprinters. if there teams can get them to lap 198, then it will be an all out sprint between those 4 teams. My beat is on cutters, delts and phi delts duking it out

Anonymous said...

What are people going to say about Cutters next year? They usually always have a stud in waiting. Kevin will graduate, and boom the dynasty will need to be rebuilt. Nothing against those other Cutters, they are pretty good. I have a feeling people are going to start making fun of them. I guess nothing changes then. : ) What a great run. If they can rebuild and finish top 5 next year, I'm super impressed! For this year, they have just as good a chance as anyone in the top 3-4.

Anonymous said...

the formula includes guys like clayton feldman, alex bishop, chris vargo, david caughlin, erik hamilton, jason fowler, all guys who were NOT eric young but have been incredible Little 5ers and cyclists just in this decade alone. you're an idiot if you think eric young is the only "formula" of the cutters

Anonymous said...

throw sasha land in there too

Anonymous said...

It sounds like part of their formula is getting guys to quit their teams and come to their team! it's all fair I know. great program + people quit to ride for them. It's tough when you have great talent, great coaches, and people quit to join your team not to mention the name Cutters which is famous. Someone needs to make another rule banning their greatness.

Todd said...

"It sounds like part of their formula is getting guys to quit their teams and come to their team!"

We're currently working on Delts, Phi Delts and Sigma Chi. The Cutters will be a true fratstar team next year.

Joking aside, we have had 2 riders come over from defunct teams in the last seven years and the main determinate was that those two guys got along really well with our guys and understood what our goal is.

Anonymous said...

Lets be frank. They wanted a ring. Now Fowler has 75.

Todd said...

Look back at when Fowler joined. We were coming off a 13th place finish and we had one returning rider - Vargo and 7 rookies. Yeah, that sounds like he made the decision because he wanted a ring. If he wanted a ring, he would have joined TMT, they were loaded!

Anonymous said...

Little known fact: I've heard of the Cutters declining on several "frat stars" even in the past few years. 1 which was top 5 in ITTs and another who was in the top 10. That says something about their team & their "formula". They don't just go after talent like the Miami Heat do & end up with an empty ring case.

Anonymous said...

cutters will make it 6 in a row!

Anonymous said...

Stuart started shit with Lusk one day at breakfast and was never called back to ride again from the stories I heard...formula or not Stuart is tough to turn away solely because of his power on the track. I'd say the formula is keep those who truly care around and happy. If you build it the rings will come; especially the last decade

Anonymous said...

Stuart probably told him to stop hogging the gravy ... and the toast ... and Eric's wheat pancakes.

Anonymous said...

I like wing it's odds this year. With Bri kovac at the helm and I have heard they ditched the ghost exchanges they could definitely be a team to watch out for. Teter will always be there but without CVK the field will have leveled a lot.

My odds are also on phi delts. Great group of riders and certainly an experienced racer in Chris west.

Anonymous said...

Chris West = Overrated

It is too bad teams like Hoosier Climbers (and to be confirmed Kappa Sigma?) end up folding because of riders jumping ship just to stack another team. It would be a much more interesting race with a spread of talent. Wouldn't it be a lot more satisfying to train and develop a team with a chance of winning than just trying to look good enough to join a team you think will win boys? I guess sitting out a year they will have a lot to think about.

Anonymous said...

Delts or Cutters for the Guys. Posibly Phi delts. guessing here.

I think Teter is going to win for the girls. They destroyed everyone last year. It was a fire drill for 90 laps and the other 3 girls looked just as fast as CVK albeit shorter sets. I thought they were going to be caught for sure after CVK got off but the lead went up to a half lap without her.

Bri is at the Helm for Wing it? What does Tom say about that?

Has everyone forgotten what happened to PDT last year?!?!

Anonymous said...

You mean how they had the deepest team in the race, drilled it on the front the majority of the race, blew the field apart in the last 30 laps, made a critical mistake at the end, only to get beat by the greatest L5 rider in the common era and eventual national crit champion, and even had they not made the mistake would have most likely gotten beat anyway, and who have the same team back this year, and 11 other guys fighting to make the team stronger, and who will most likely try to rip everyone's legs apart come April, because they will once again have the deepest and strongest team? No, no one has forgotten and I'm sure they haven't either.

Boom!

Anonymous said...

Count on Phi Delts to sit nicely in 2nd place again this year.

Anonymous said...

@7:42

I really liked how Teter's record setting TP run had everyone "sharing" the pulls. Riders like CVK are really hard to replace. However, your Wing it comment is interesting.

Anonymous said...

Boom! @ 9:54 - Taking away all the gibberish, the Phi Delt's had a lap on the field and lost it.

Now, they have to contend with losing their sprinter and 1st/2nd best rider in Chris West, while dealing with their team size.

Just one idea, but why dont you make cuts? 6 is better than 15.

Anonymous said...

Man folks you have a lot of faith in me. While taking over IUCC and killing the Wing It girls, how will i possibly have time to practice law?? (you are idiots. all of you)

Phi Delts are much deeper than delts or cutters. Cutters are deep this year but phi delts are going to be studs. Delts on the other hand lost James Coudright. Although RJ Stuart remains his team flew under the radar in itts last year, crashed out so that he spent the entire day chasing back 2 laps and none of them have won a road race/crit to date.

Heating up already, love it! Phi delts didn't win the white jersey last year either: cutters won that as well and probably would have walked away with TP as well but were cocky and saving people. Argue all you want but they were by far the best team last year not only because of Eric but the other guys as well. Eric will be the first to tell you that he had a very strong supporting cast

Anonymous said...

Why all the talk about West? Sharp & Sven are the one's that are going to destroy everyone this year. Those guys were shattered last year and carried that hate with them all summer. That is an edge the other teams dont have.

The whole quals rule is stupid so if Chris did appeal it and is in the race, good for him. We could use a guy to tow us around all day.

Who would win a 4 lap ITT between Courtney & Tom? Make it happen IUSF!

Until someone beats them, the favorite has to be Cutters. Plain and simple. 5 years in a row is no fluke, that's just a great program doing what it does best, win.

2008 - top 2 riders out all spring with injuries.
2009 - two penalties (one with less than 30 to go) and a wreck.
2010 - black flag eliminates a 3/4 lap lead
2011 - lapped after a wreck

Yeah, the Cutters only have good luck and roses come their way.

Just like in every sport you have athletes and coaches. Just like someone might write that about Bobby Knight and Coach K. The basketball team is made of student athletes but it's still valid to talk about coaches. In this case of Little 5, more people know the coaches that have been around for years than about 15-20 riders who have been around for 4 years. So while you make a nice point about the athletes being most important, the coaches provide a lot of support and time and are not getting paid a single dime in most cases. There is no reason to be disrespectful of what they do. It's obvious that coaches have egos, but so do riders and there is nothing wrong with either as their passion is Little 5. Tom may be a fanatic, but he's fanatical about putting a good team out there on raceday even if it sometimes seems like he wants the spotlight. who cares. he's doing more good than harm. I don't know how anyone can question his motives when all he does is help people for free.

Giving back makes you feel good about yourself. Is that selfish?

chris west will by far not be the best one on the track

Because he's not eligible, right? Can we get a definitive answer - is or is he not eligible?

Isn't the Appeals Board held in the spring? So we won't know until then?

For anyone that thinks HoosierClimber? folded because people jumped ship. The team didn't fold. We're all a really good friends and no one betrayed anyone. Three of the four riders from last year either graduated or decided not to pursue L5 anymore. One rider had eligibility and decided to race. No team called or recruited him, he chose a team.

Does anyone that posts on this board (other than Tom, Bri, Todd, and Fake Bill Armstrong) know a single thing about this bike race. You can appeal in both the fall and spring. This information, along with many of interesting rules and facts, is contained within the rider's manual. You might want to take a gander at that once you get done looking to BVN.

was that one rider from hoosier climber aaron baer?

Oh, I do not appreciate people ragging on my girls! The team element of the Teter TP record really isn't something to be scoffed at. I would challenge you to name another team that year with three riders, outside of their top rider, who could have held that pace. Not to mention they did it with enough extra energy to cheer us on. Then, during the race not many girls could hold their wheels. I'm pretty sure they could hold on to anyone else's wheel, and then some!

Put your name on your posts so we will see who has some balls and who can talk the talk and walk the walk come April. Talk shit and back it up or it's not impressive. Walsh for the W come April write it down

Hank...go put a bra on. The only reason you have a ring is because you had a national crit champion on your team who has tree trunks as legs.

Also tom cox has a great cock.

Put your name on your post then come talk to me you little bitch. And brace yourself because these is going to hurt but not only do I have one ring, but wait here's another and by golly there's another right next to it. It's a beautiful thing too let me tell ya. I pray to the Eric Young gods every night for allowing my parents to conceive me and put me on this earth to laugh at minions like yourself because you're just not good enough to win a ring in compassion to my three. I do thank Erik Hamilton too because even though I'm better than you he would have rode instead of me my rookie year only allowing rings to be placed on two of my wonderful fingers instead of three. Cutters!

Hank grow up

It is cute how a year removed from the race and Hank "Derp" Lusk has nothing better to do that talk shit on BVN. Some things will never change I guess. Apparently his shift at Burger King must have ended a few minutes early so he hard time to vomit that last post onto the keyboard before getting his jammies on and going to bed. Maybe if his manager gives him a few minutes off today we will have another flash of brilliance grace us.

GP –

Will you please remove the post that was submitted on September 30, 2011 at 2:56 p.m. Please also send me this person’s IP Address and any other identifying information that you have.

I realize that this board is not always all that serious, but I think that this post crosses the line. Under no circumstances is it appropriate to purport to be someone that you are not. I try to be as helpful as possible to the entire Little 5 and cycling community, and I don’t appreciate having someone posting anything – much less what was posted – under my name.

Sincerely,

Brian Drummy

Pretty sure Hank is in grad school and going to be a doctor in three years. I appreciate his love for competitiveness even as an alumni.

you're all idiots. hank is an awesome guy and you guys clearly don't know him at all. he's the nicest guy, and smart to boot. and you're just jealous that he's succeeded at L5 and you haven't

Anonymous said...

You know you left your mark on the race if people still talk about you when you're gone. Good on ya Hank. I smell jealousy on this board. Alot of people just want a 1/3 of what you have. People have complained about the Cutters for years and the same result happens every April. Maybe people will stop complaining and start training hard this year. They aren't off to a good start thus far

Anonymous said...

maybe complaining about the cutters makes them think they'll be better in the spring

Anonymous said...

Nobody talks about anything he did while he rode... Just what an idiot he acts like now when he posts

Anonymous said...

And it's comparison, not compassion, Dr. Idiot
